How wonderful!

Do you believe that any of the people who were killed were actual practices witches? I don't mean like fantasy magic powers type witches, but similar to shamans or healers or magic people in africa today. I was just thinking about this, and Ill admit I recalled you did write your thesis on something concerning such things.

Yes, I believe that some were. I believe in the paranormal, and that witches can contact the spirit world. I think a small minority of the condemned were, indeed, witches.

Did you come across any accounts in your research that appeared to be legitimately practicing witches?

Yes. Here's the things. For innocent old ladies, the natural thing to do when being accused of witchcraft is to deny it, right? And most did. Unfortunately, those who denied it were the most likely to be tortured and killed. Ironically, the accused who IMMEDIATELY admitted to it, and started humbly repenting and groveling, were the ones who were "restored" to the church and not killed. Ok, so, there is a third class of accused: the ones who admitted to it, and acted calmly and nonchalantly. I believe these were the true witches.

Actually, I can name one. The original African slave Tituba who worked for the family whose daughters were accused of witches in Salem, openly admitted that she was a witch, that she used Voodoo, and that she used black magic. I would call her a true witch. She never denied it, but rather seemed almost proud of it.

Oh, yes, I do remember her actually.

Any others you can think of, and if you have any sources you can recommend. I am working on a novel. That is like the scarlet letter only she isnt just fucking the priest (no child), but she is a witch.

I would argue that, in the Salem trials, Tituba and the two girls she knew were real witches. After the hysteria, the people of Salem signed a document apologizing for what they did, and admitting that they were wrong and got caught up in mania. Oddly, the two girls did not sign it.
