Topic: The US is the only first world nation with so many guns readily available to almost anyone.

It also leads most of the world in gun deaths. How can Americans not see the connexion?

hater !JGlOo5d1iU joined in and replied with this 11 years ago, 7 minutes later[^] [v] #594,879

That's not the issue. That just makes sense that more guns would result in more gun deaths. The issue is, we have a constitution that says our rights to personal gun ownership will not be infringed. Giving up our guns would mean we have no equalizing force in case of hostile government actions. The risk of dying a gun death isn't so high that I'm concerned. Maybe if I were a young black male, but I'm not.

The UK has more knife deaths and attacks per capita than the US, why don't they ban knives?

Are you being intentionally stupid?

> "...the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

Or, are you suggesting this means the people are allowed to have "keep arms" and "bear arms" and this has nothing to do with gun ownership, if so, what are "keep arms" and how do I get "bear arms?"

We like our dangerous freedom! Where I live it's fairly common to see people with a gun in a holster on their hip, and it's really no big deal. Those are just the guns you see! Most people conceal their guns. Almost every household around here has guns of some sort, and during hunting season guns are everywhere. But in spite of all that murders are very rare around here.

The inner city the culture is a bit different, most houses don't have guns, and firearms are carried almost exclusively by criminals. Just last week I went to Kansas City Missouri and drove into the scene of double homicide, the guys got shot just a few minutes before at some chicken joint. More guns doesn't mean more murder. Americans will find a way to kill each other, we are a can do kinda people. Look at prison weapons, if people want to kill, they will find a way.

The military isn't who you would be facing, you'd be fighting the police most likely.

Still, if the situation is bad enough where the generals are in the pockets of the Washington elite, I certainly wouldn't want to be fighting back with sticks and stones.

The military isn't trained or indoctrinated to kill uS civilians, and if the national guard starts acting up, I'm sure the military would act as a peacekeeping force. It's the police who would be the threat.

Jump, if it reaches a point where the government and some citizens are at odds and openly fighting, the military isn't going to just sit by while you only have to fight those evil, facist police. This situation is about the government fighting the citizens, not just the police.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_firearm-related_death_rate

3.55 gun related homicides per 100,000 per year in america. The only countries that are doing worse are:

* Costa Rica
* Nicaragua
* Paraguay
* Mexico
* Panama
* South Africa
* Brazil
* Colombia
* Guatemala
* Swaziland
* Venezuela
* Jamaica
* El Salvador
* Honduras

Meanwhile the first world (other than america) averages at less than 0.6 per 100,000. Americans are 18x more likely to get shot to death than me.

I don't recall hearing that the redcoats had choppers and tanks and drones, while the revolutionaries made do and won with just their muskets.

As for Iraq, I suppose the same could apply if the citizens tried fighting guerrilla warfare, but the U.S. army is probably much more numerous and better off in its homeland than a distant, third-world country. But even then, the insurgents in Iraq didn't really defeat the U.S. army, did they?

I'm sure they would try, but I have high faith the military would not intervene against US citizens during civil unrest. It's not like Libya where the dictator is paying their salaries and all the generals are his buddies. Generals in the US are career military personnel, they have no loyalty to individual politicians.

I'm sure at first the different national guards could be deployed, assuming the particular governors support Washington, but if they attempted to do anything like bombing civilians or using tanks, I think the military could very well step in to prevent that. Which, just their presence alone would he enough.

Look at Egypt, happened there.

Yes. The Somalis are actually among the cleverest in Africa and have exploited the maritime warfare loophole to slash their firearm homicide statistics. Presidential candidate Donald Trump is conducting research into replacing the US firearm stock with very small naval cannons mounted on little boats which is projected to reduce the firearm homicide rate by 97% with only negligible impact on the total murder (all causes) rate.

This would be a genius move by Trump. It would essentially force all gun crime to relocate to the coast or a large body of water, so you could just have the U.S. Navy deal with it instead of the police. Excellent way to free up police resources, Trump is clearly able to apply his business acumen to national issues.
