"You never know just how you look through other people's eyes." Pepper, Butthole Surfers
In contrast to this, you actually never know how you look in your own eyes b/c there's no way to see yourself as an object. This is proved in the studies that show that when you look into a mirror, you "correct" what you look like and correct asymmetries. Let's be frank, we fantasize what we look like. Even if you take another mirror and look at yourself doubled you'll look weird b/c you mind hasn't "adjusted" (fantasized) yet. After a bit of time of looking through doubled mirrors though you start to look "normal". This is called brainwashing. The true holders of self consciousness are thus not the upper primates who look at their image and see the fantasy as real but instead lower primates who look and see a stranger. They see the truth, that if you try to look at yourself through your own eyes you encounter a stranger. The process of objectification of yourself automatically results in distortion. Look in the mirror and you'll see the lie, the lie that put your desire in motion, the lie that you tell yourself to keep your desire in motion - your face is the mask of the inconsistencies in the desire of the other. You maintain this as your personality. The only liberation is to see this lie for what it is but there is no seeing through the lie, it must be present or reality disintegrates.
In a way yeah. I don't pretend to be an expert on zizek but this is how i understand it. Okay, so have you heard of the condition called face blindness? Your vision is 99% fine EXCEPT for some reason you
cannot see much difference between faces, all faces look kind of similar. Maybe our faces are very similar but we evolved a highly subjective way of seeing faces.
So when you look at the mirror and think you are seeing your face, you are actually seeing the face that you think and wish/feel is your face.
