Depends on what you are planning to do. Buy and sell for short term gain and pay the tax's - or buy low and sell high but are willing to wait 1yr+

One trade I made this AM - Disney. Pull up Disney and look at it over 5 years. Kinda nice straight line great multiplier of money. I have been buying and selling Disney for more years then I think you have been alive. Back to just b4 they bought ABC TV. - So take a look at why I bought Disney this AM. See how I waited for it to take a dive from its straight line run up. I can find not a single reason why this well managed company will not continue to climb. Buying today at $107 when it was a few days ago $121.

And don't buy any - but keep track of it - Frankly the best way to learn about your ability to select quality stocks is to play the market Only on paper for a few months If you are looking for short term gains. This method not so much so good for long term - For short term it rocks.

Of course there are examples where such is true. Enron for instance.
The only way to play the market and not lose is - Invest only as much as you are willing to lose. The best way is to play on paper for a while - said that sorry for repeat but its IMPORTANT!

One just needs a SOLID COMPANY - Well managed that consistently outperforms in multiple ways. Has product people LOVE - Product people Need - Then look for a glitch where the stock takes a dip so you can buy and wait for it to go back to full on ERECTION . Flaccid is good and as in a Healthy person a Healthy company will get ERECT again and rise to the occasion.

Disney for instance was down rated just a bit re ESPN lose of people watching. This is prior to Football season and people changing platforms for view - So price dropped YET YET - Yesterday EVERYONE at the same time rated it a BUY!! - Experts are angry at Disney because they cannot see inside plans re Starwars - As if any movie studio EVER opens up plans Other then theme parks are about to build out to take advantage of movie performance. AND You all can on paper keep and eye on the company and call me out on performance.

Of course if you look back 1.2 years ago
http://minichan.org/topic/35103#reply_483522

I was thinking mainly about cyclical markets like oil. It's crashed now bit I think it's more likely than not to rebound in a few years (it never has stayed down), taking oil companies with it. Maybe not to insane 2007 levels again but I think oil will be more expensive in a couple of years. To be clear, I'm not talking about day trading but buy and hold for 2-3 years.

I dunno, they both look pretty frothy these past couple of years. I'll wait for $50 NFLX and $300 GOOG. I want to buy the stock that's tanking, the stock that's not "buy" or or even "sell" but the thing below sell — run like hell. Hence my oil and aluminum portfolio. I'm thinking about getting into Exxon or Chevron at $50 in a few weeks. I was a bit impetuous getting into Marathon Oil so soon I see now I should have waited a bit longer but it was literally my first trade ever. I fully expect to lose a bit more before it gets better.

Currently everyone's talking about $30 oil being the "new normal" which is what they said about $150 oil a few years ago and everyone knows what happened to that. I bet oil recovers by mid 2016.

There is a way to make lots of money on a stock that is tanking. I have almost never done such.
You can bet that a stock will climb or fall.
You can get more margin and invest less if you bet its going to tank - But if it does NOT tank then you go in the tank big time.

Has it really been 2 months already?
I started August 22 with 46 shares of Marathon Oil at $16.45 a share, and 24 of Alcoa at $9.11, I held onto these and then a few weeks ago Walmart stock tanked so I bought 10 shares at $59.05

October was a rough month and for a while my stocks were all deep in the red, Alcoa is stupid and I'll probably sell it soon. Marathon oil and Walmart look like solid value in the long term.

Overall just kicking myself for not buying a hundred more shares of Marathon when it went down to $14.96 but my job is in jeopardy and I just didn't feel safe risking that much cash.

The bottom line: up $118. Not exactly Gordon Gekko but if I saw $118 in the street I'd pick it up.

Quick look at how analysts look at Walmart
http://markets.ft.com/research/Markets/Tearsheets/Forecasts?s=WMT:NYQ

As of Nov 02, 2015, the consensus forecast amongst 30 polled investment analysts covering Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. advises investors to hold their position in the company. This has been the consensus forecast since the sentiment of investment analysts deteriorated on Aug 11, 2014. The previous consensus forecast advised that Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. would outperform the market.

So two say buy one says selling the others say hold

I use this site a lot and Marathon Oil so the analysts are on your side

Buy 8
Outperform 8
Hold 11
Underperform 0
Sell 1
No opinion 0

Update: Marathon and Alcoa down 49 and 28% respectively. The whole market is down relative to the last update, though. Damn. Walmart up 4%. I see American Express has taken a beating re:missed earnings and it might be a bargain in a while.

I have cashed $8.02 in dividends between the companies and have plowed that and $200 into three shares of the Wisdom Tree MidCap dividend fund and look forward to my $0.45 dividend from such in February.

I think the China crisis story is way oversold and things will pick up soonish. In other words it's just a temporary psychological panic. I also think the oil crash will resolve itself this year with some kind of instability in the Middle East.

> I also think the oil crash will resolve itself this year with some kind of instability in the Middle East.
Looks like Mid East will be in turmoil for a few more centuries. In the short term quality Iran crude is already being shipped via tankers.

There is some kind of deal in North Dakota on crude oil.
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-01-18/the-north-dakota-crude-oil-that-s-worth-less-than-nothing

Flint Hills values North Dakota Sour crude at $1.50 a barrel
Crude prices based on sulfur content and transport costs

Oil is so plentiful and cheap in the U.S. that at least one buyer says it would pay almost nothing to take a certain type of low-quality crude.

Flint Hills Resources LLC, the refining arm of billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch’s industrial empire, said it offered to pay $1.50 a barrel Friday for North Dakota Sour, a high-sulfur grade of crude, according to a corrected list of prices posted on its website Monday. It had previously posted a price of -$0.50. The crude is down from $13.50 a barrel a year ago and $47.60 in January 2014.

While the near-zero price is due to the lack of pipeline capacity for a particular variety of ultra low quality crude, it underscores how dire things are in the U.S. oil patch. U.S. benchmark oil prices have collapsed more than 70 percent in the past 18 months and fell below $30 a barrel for the first time in 12 years last week. West Texas Intermediate traded as low as $28.36 in New York. Brent, the international benchmark, settled at $28.55 in London.

That -50cents was an error.

Keystone pipeline idea sure is silly based on this

Producers outside the U.S. are also feeling pain. The price for Canadian bitumen -- the thick, sticky substance at the center of the heated debate over TransCanada Corp.’s Keystone XL pipeline - fell to $8.35 last week, down from as much as $80 less than two years ago.

It was probably also much cheaper than one at a "real" electronics store. I still think your friend got one from the late '90s at the end of the VHS days and you simply can't compare a 1999 Walmart VCR to one of the brick shithouse Sony or Matsushita ones from the '80s.

They do anything that egregious nowadays. The crappy "Walmart" versions were always cheap though — I can't imagine anyone buying the $199 laptop or HDTV thinks they're getting top quality.

Metæ (OP) double-posted this 10 years ago, 16 minutes later, 5 months after the original post[^] [v] #644,541

I saw that. Being a natural product, oil does come in different grades and refiners have to do a lot of hard expensive work to get the sulfur out of "sour" crude to make saleable products so I'm not surprised. It does drive home though that a barrel of oil does necessarily mean the $32/bbl headline number.

Keystone XL was way over hyped by the left though the name "Keystone XL" does sound sinister. They should have just called it the Canadian-American Pipeline or something.

Good luck on your day trading. I'm not that brave yet myself!

I never had the stomach to buy them. That said I have invested in more then one company that was backed by high yield JUNK Bonds. In fact currently I think I will soon lose some money as a result. However over they years I have made enough so that this one that I am sure will tank on me is just a bump in the road of investing.

Me I say avoid buying JUNK. But I do no people that have done more then ok with them.

Also the only way I can make a go with a bit of day trading is to use a proxy. When I am deep in dutch with a client I cannot afford the time it takes to have eyes pinned on stocks so I have a couple of buddies who have also invested in the same stocks and will do the trades for me as well. As soon as the market goes stable again I will end this sort term nonsense of day trading. I just got a preliminary report from a friend who looked at my investment portfolio. His prelim analysis is not pleasant to look at. My stock market returns look terrific on paper but do not compare to wot I have gained in real estate. Thing is I really hate doing stuff in real estate. Keeping a core group of fix it repair people and wot it takes to buy and improve and then long term lease a condo or house is a fucking pain. Not a moment of pleasure compared to lots of fun in the stock market - Research - I bet its the same feeling miners get when they discover a vein of gold in a mine.

Nor in the current condo/house market is there a chance in hell I can get a deal on anything currently. Wood have to wait until a major crash like last time.

Why do people buy lottery tickets? The odds suck. If you want to gamble just get an Etrade account. I mean, even if you make a terrible bet (like I did) you only lose like half your money, but if you hold on you might even win that back! With a lottery ticket you just lose and the state takes all the money anyway.

If you play the lottery people will think you are a trashy prole who lives in a trailer park. If you buy stocks you can tell people you're an "investor" with "a targeted portfolio strategy leveraging hedged equity positions in the mid cap growth and high yield municipal bond sectors" and they will be in awe of your financial prowess.

The motive is the same in both cases: something for nothing and there's no difference between hoping to win a scratch-off and hoping AMZN stock goes up. It's retarded, I've seen people buy $50 of lottery tickets when for that money they could have bought a share of American Express or four of Ford. Even if they don't go up both pay a respectable dividend.

Also I realized being a shareholder is much like being a citizen. Nominally I am an owner of Marathon Oil (and a few other companies) and the Board of Directors are my elected representatives running the company on my behalf. I can go to shareholder meetings and vote and write a letter to the CEO but does any of it mean a damn thing? I might as well just stay home and cash my dividend checks and let the big guys figure it amongst themselves.
