Topic: Is Daenerys Targaryen suppose to be a Roman?

Anonymous A started this discussion 10 years ago #44,665

According to my research, House Targaryen originated in the ancient civilization known as Valyria which is suppose to be George R. R. Martin's equivalent to Rome. So does this mean that Daenerys Stormborn is essentially a Roman in their world and does this essentially mean she is a Roman contesting the practice of slavery? If so, what would Spartacus think of this?

That depends. Has he ever participated in a testudo formation? That is the classic sign of somebody being Roman.

I mean by ethnicity not by military expertise.

All the things in the book are influenced by many things, nothing is a direct mode for something from the real world.

The wall is a direct mode to the Hadrian's Wall.

The concept of the wall was inspired by Hadrians Wall but it isn't a direct copy+paste, they are different in many ways

Thus it is their world's equivalent of the Hadrian's Wall.

Fuck you, past KL! That reply was lame! Move over, I'm taking over!

@OP
Uhhh I guess. I don't know much about George R.R.R. Martin's books, but I've heard he was heavily inspired by various ancient and medieval histories, the Romans amongst them.

Honestly, I think it's extremely standard in fiction to have civilizations inspired by real-world civilizations, and the Romans are one of the most common ones to use for this. If you care to look, you'll find Roman-flavoured groups in a lot of fictional worlds.
