the i7-6700k specifically. it looks nice. i'm still using a vintage i7-2600k and it is still a strong gaming cpu but that ddr4... and it's about 30% better on average than the 2600k. at stock clock.
but it's still 4 cores, the 6700k. i guess if i sack up and wait i can hold off for another generation. shit. i think i just talked myself out of it.

Not worth upgrading, specially not from a i7-2600k... wouldn't even be worth to upgrade from i5-2xxx... if they don't go for radical architectural changes, they will keep pushing such marginal upgrades.

it's a new socket too, so i'd have to replace motherboard as well as memory. i'm really trying to hold off, but a 30% performance increase is my usual threshold for upgrades. but sandy bridge is soooo good. maybe i just should add a water loop and OC it to 4.4, that would very seriously close the gap on a stock clock 6700 at least.
i guess i'll do that. i just had no idea a 2600k would be such a good chip it would take this long to replace. i've had it like 4 years or something. guess it'll be a while before i'm using ddr4 :(

turns out the i7-6700k is enough of an upgrade that it's a serious contender for replacing sandy bridge. it's a 14nm vs 32nm, and it's a full 1ghz faster stock clock and is looking good for 5ghz stable OC.
and the 10nm die shrink that succeeds skylake has been delayed until 2017. they are going to refresh skylake (and probably make a version with a lot more on-board cache like the 5830 or whatever the boss is) but if i understand correctly that's mostly going to effect integrated graphics and will be useless on a system with dedicated graphics. so waiting will likely put me at 18 months from an upgrade. they'll do a 10nm die shrink and then 6 months later refresh the architecture and release the super-boss chips (like the 2600k and hopefully skylake)
and if the trend of modest gains continues then the 10nm die shrink will give less gains than the shrink from 32nm to 22nm.
so it looks like skylake could be not only be an overclockers preferred chip, it might be one of the last legendary core series chips. beyond 10nm they'll either need to compensate for the effects of quantum mechanics or they'll need materials other than silicone (or radically different designs.)
so it's looking good for upgrade time this fall.

so now that's i'm seriously considering basically a complete rebuild rather than a simple refresh i've got some choices to make. I'll at the very least be replacing the motherboard, CPU and memory. i can totally keep those parts in service though and build me a new machine for work. i've actually got tons of parts, old cases, fans, PSUs, HDDs, motherboards and CPUs, video cards, so even out of junk laying around i could build a full sized tower with an 17-2600k on a EROG motherboard and dual gtx570's. i'd still be able to play Crisis, lol. but i could see that as being my go-to desktop for doing web stuff. i've been tasked with wearing more unusual hats lately and i'm finding my non-workstation grade kit being severely lacking. I've had to work from home some days because i was crashing at work. (funny story. i was convinced i was just inexperienced with illustrator and was doing something very bad and causing it, but no, apparently i was working with files that had so many high res images and so many layers that i was like running out of memory (all four gigabites.) i ended up working from home and just using gimp and inkscape and it worked fine. but at work i could barely place objects because it would hop around.
so i'd be replacing basically some little celeron processor with integrated graphics that is 5 years old or something. it's also buggy as fuck. so it's like a communal machine, that anyone who needs a computer can just hop on and start using (and fucking up). and usually that person is me. ;) i'm thinking i'll create 2 user accounts, one for me as admin and another "guest" that everyone else signs into without a password. If i go this route and build a new work computer then i'll need to ask for money for it, because honestly my antec tower is way too large and loud for the space. I would need to go micro/mini atx. unfortunately it looks like 1155 socket motherboard are hard to come by these days, especially in a good quality mATX. requiring the 2600k would probably be a non-starter. that means i'd be buying another new motherboard and CPU. i could maybe squeeze a mid-tower in there, but where's the fun in that?
an alternative is to replace the old dual-core 1.8ghz core duo or whatever the fuck i've got in the living room pushing netflicks on an old 460gtx. it's nothing more than a stream machine. but i don't need a 980gtx for that.
i think i'd probably rather have that kind of power available at work though. maybe i can get them to give me some money, too.
Not that i really need to worry about video cards, i can totally carry it over to a new build (and likely will) but i'm always considering SLI, and there's a chance i'll go ahead at some point the the next 6 months and buy another one. i'd be very happy playing around with dual 980gtx's, i'd have 8gb vram and some pretty boss performance, but the gtx980ti is like 30% better for a very small premium. i'd have 12 Gb of vram and be outperforming titans (for a total 60% better than dual 980gtx's). now that's how you do flagship CPU's right, am i right? i mean that would be fucking glorious. but of course, i'd be paying a premium for buying into both the new CPU and the new ti version. so, i could do a single gtx980ti and go SLI after a price cut or two, but.... that sounds likes something a boring person would do. same with running a flagship CPU with middle-of-the road high end components. That's what i did with the 2600k 3 years ago, and i always regretted not getting the gtx580ti. and when i got the 980 in the back of my mind i was thinking, there's always e-bay, you can sell it to someone
