I don't think its obnoxious to choose a trend from another country, but I definitely would go with a local trend so as not to seem odd. Being a foreigner would be a ban enougH, especially in a place as racist as Asia. It's not like the US were non-ethnic majorities can speak their mind and force acceptance.
