Why do judges and juries issue prison sentences for multiple lifetimes when most humans get one? If this is due to some Christian belief then the soul wouldn’t even be on Earth anymore to serve and to assume that Earthly punishments outweigh Godly punishment should be considered blasphemy. That soul would have spent an eternity in Hell instead. If this is a reincarnation thing then I do not understand how it will work. Usually according to the belief, a soul is reincarnated into a baby. So they are going to through an innocent newborn baby into the slammer for the actions of a past life that they are not aware of? Where is the justice in that?
Even logically, humans would never live to see the sentence expire even if life expectancy nowadays is 150 years. So in this case, why isn’t “life in prison without the possibility of parole” the highest sentence one could receive?

As I understand it, it has to do with the possible clearing of charges for a single death in the future based on new evidence. They might get out of one sentence, but they'll still be in prison serving for another.

Even if they die they have to hang around and serve their sentence. It's a plot by the courts to create ghosts. Ghosts keep old prisons feeling spooky and create jobs for ghost hunters.

Yes, which is cruel and unusual punishment. Few people are so dangerous that awareness and proactive measures cannot make them safe for society.
Even people who think the death penalty is "cruel and unusual" often argue that life in prison is worse, which it isn't as people fight to avoid the death penalty in favor of life, and it's also arguing that life in prison is too cruel and unusual, but activist positions aren't rational, they're emotional. Humans are pathetically stupid self-centered hypocrites. They're not willing, typically, to look at issues objectively. It's why we should all be wiped out, but that's another discussion.
