When did "STI" become the common term instead of "STD"? I've always called them "STDs" and had never heard anyone call them "STIs" until a couple years ago.

In reality, I have no idea. Google trends suggests that STD is a more common term for it as most the peaks in searches for "STI" were concerned with SunTrust banks (stock symbol STI) or the Subaru Impreza. Maybe it's a UK vs. US thing? I really don't know m8.
Also, the use of "Venereal Disease" seems to be a baby boomer thing that is quickly dropping out of fashion.
