rather than being rotated during encoding, the image is stored in the native landscape format and only rotated by the decoder based on the embedded exif instructions. Since internet capable cameras ("smart" phones) refuse to simply encode the picture with the proper orientation, browsers were forced to compensate by implementing exif orientation correction.
