I knew people who used to say it seriously when they'd get worked up about politics, and I always thought it was along the same lines as saying "These United States of America." It's something somebody who's overly patriotic would say, and I thought the shtick was making fun of that whole attitude.

MOST US Americans are not even aware that Canada is America.
Then of course there is about 1/2 Mexico as part of North America. The other half all the way down to Chile is Central and South America.

I say it because I find it arrogant that America includes two continents with dozens of countries, but the US decides that IT is "America" and no others. Incredibly arrogant, like if France started calling itself Europe.
