Is Minecraft fun again?

It's been decently fun for at least two updates now.
1.8 added quite a bit especially if you like making "internal mods" using command blocks and redstone.
1.9 added much more including an infinitely generating End.

is it a game yet, or is it still just a glorified sandbox?

What do you mean? Survival mode was still a game when we played.

back in the day they were always talking about story mode or adventure mode or something like that and they ultimately abandoned that and called the modding community good enough to fill in that gap in actual gameplay. Minecraft is nothing but a bunch of game mechanics without any point except to survive... to survive more. it was fruitless and pointless. I always expected mojang would turn their sandbox full of mechanics into an actual game, but they got paid 2 billion dollars and abandoned ship.

i mean i get it, the sandbox survival stuff was pretty cool, but it wasn't a full featured "game." certainly not a single player game. that was just boring and repetitive and you were forced to always "use your imagination" to fill in the huge gaps in content. Anyway, i was around at the beginning and was always looking forward to an actual game with some kind of a point beyond keeping your food and health meter full. i mean even a simple objectives system with some kind of PvE interactions would have been enough, but we didn't even get that. hell, they never even added an in-game crafting book and you still have to go to the internet to figure out how to build anything in game. i can't believe microsoft paid 2 fucking billion dollars for a game that you have to alt-tab out of just to figure out the simplest recipe for god's sake.

anyway, i still consider it unfinished and mojang as having failed to deliver on half of the content they promised. and it's the most profitable game in history or some shit? i think it proves that games today are featureless wastelands and devs all over the place jumped right on the "survival game" bandwagon and now there are a thousand shitty sandbox games without actual content in them because game devs discovered "emergent gameplay" and think that means they can forgo adding actual content to their shitty little unreal 4 game mechanic mash-ups.

and what really pissed me off the most was when i found out mojang was using dollars raised from minecraft sales to make Scrolls and other shitty games instead of hiring on new/better people to work on the game that raised them their fucking millions. but, recently i heard that infiniminer was reverse engineered and i bet notch stole a bunch of shit from it and that's why he's not super fucking proud of it and wanted to abandon it ASAP. towards the end he hated working on it and didn't even try, he worked on other shit and like Jens did all the minecraft stuff. So i think notch ended up wasting a lot of dev dollars on stupid ass side projects for whatever reason and did all minecraft enthusiasts a disservice when he started his piss poor moonlighting.

I was glad to hear microsoft bought it, because i expect a minecraft 2 and hopefully they actually gamify the mechanics and deliver an actual game. but, i think i might have my hopes misplaced since they seem to just be using it to make kids force their parents to upgrade windows. so, whatever.

minecraft is better off as a sandbox, im' just amazed at how this shitty sandbox got as popular and profitable as it is, it doesn't deserves even 1/4 of all of that

he raised a shit ton of millions and it could have been a much better game if he would have given up on fucking java and hired quality coders to write it in a real language. but no, he redirected as much funding away from minecraft development as possible and let a skeleton crew of like 3 people do all the work.

Minecraft still has goals, bro.

1) Construct a shelter.
2) Make sure you have enough food.
3) Get to the Nether.
4) Get to the End.
5) Defeat the Ender Dragon and explore the new dungeons (new).
6) Watch Credits.
7) Defeat the Wither.

You made it sound like there are absolutely no goals whatsoever when there are still goals. They are just few.

Also, it's not just clones that follow Mojang's "development plan", other games of different genres seem to be doing it too.

So it impacted the whole gaming industry in the worst ways.

squeegee replied with this 11 years ago, 2 minutes later, 4 hours after the original post[^] [v] #584,405

and really all they had to do to make an adventure mode was give us a reason to work our way to the end. Make the fucking villages useful and then add random ender dragon attacks and the have the villagers fill in information gaps, like, where to go, what to do, and give you a way to protect them and then you'd be wanting to build all kinds of stuff to defend them and even work your way to the end to kill the ender dragon in a real adventure tale that could have been emergent from a procedurally generated mission system.

but oh no, here's some re-textured cobblestone that we spent the last 2 months on -.-

I actually enjoy player created content. Roleplaying in reign of kings was some of the most fun I had. One time, I lured people to my church, held a small service and then I was going to bless a few individuals.

I lured them to a dungeon, told them to kneel and pray, and I would take them to bless one by one.

I ended up executing them instead. Got through two of them before it ended with us trying to stone another through windows cause he wasnt bad and was too difficult to capture (they knew after I captured the first dude what I was up to).

It was like $20 or less when I bought it. It definitely was worth it, and I never got really into it even.

Adventure mode was added for those who like to make "adventure maps".
You might have had your hopes up for that one.

I still wish they had more things to find when exploring.

yes, but ask yourself why do you do any of those things? why get to the nether? i beat the survival game with a simple shack and tiny farm. i don't need to do anything else to survive. getting to the nether or the end or killing the dragon were laregly irrelevant to the survival goal. And i'm sorry, exploration of a procedurally generated world that doesn't actually change in anything but configuration isn't fucking fun after the first time you do it. unless you have other goals minecraft is terrible boring.

and that's where imagination and what you're talking about come in. those are all self-made goals that you don't have any reason to complete except you read about it on the forum and want to "visit the end and see the dragon" or whatever. it's just lazy to leave half of the game up to your imagination.

you know, dump out a box of GI Joe's and tell me how that's a "game." it's not a game unless you create fun things to do with your imagination. And pretending that a Testificate "chief" has asked you to wall in their town and protect them against zombies is not Mojang creating an actual game. it's a hodegepodge of game-mechanics, and that is all. honestly, it's why Star Wars Galaxies failed so hard. it wasn't much of a game, it was more like a whole lot of game mechanics and they just crossed their fingers that players would fill in the gaps and a game would emerge, which it sort of did, and then died because there was a fundamental lack of a game that turned people off quickly.

game mechanics != a fully functional game

> Adventure mode was added for those who like to make "adventure maps".
> You might have had your hopes up for that one.

no! i did not! they called it story mode well before "adventure mode" and that's what i mean when they just called modding tools good enough. they left all the real work making it a game on modders, and that's fucking lazy and cheap and wasn't what was promised in the beginning. it certainly wasn't what was implied. what was implied is that NpC's would have things for you to DO, and that they were adding a fucking story. Then, much later, years later in fact, they started calling it adventure mode and said it was for modders to make the story mode for them. pissed me right off, and no, you're wrong. stop white knighting, notch has 2 fucking billion dollars for his half-assed afterthought of a game.

> I still wish they had more things to find when exploring.

no fucking shit you do! everyone does!@ it lacks content god damnit!

and the punch in the face is their gay little ending where they call "you pretending" the fucking game! it's a joke.

what, that an entirely different developer has been farmed out to deliver the promise made by mojang to deliver a game? and that it's going to be a completely different title that'll cost 4 times more than the original game?

kinda. yeah. especially considering that they earned 2 billion bucks for their broken half delivered game. i will say that it's a lot less broken now, in full release and after untold numners of patches, but, it's still no more than the sandbox we had as early as beta 0.8. just a few more additional redstone mechanics, bug fixes and improved textures.

it's nice that telltale recognizes people should be told they can craft shit and be shown how to do it. it looks self contained and doesn't rely on internet searches to fill in crucial details on how the game works. you know, like in a real game.

To all of the above haters and idiots:

It doesn't matter if you think Minecraft is fun, complete, worthwhile, interesting or otherwise.
The matter of the fact is it made lots of fucking money.

Why?:

Because people like fucking playing it.
They don't care if there are a few outliers who think they game should have more or is shit.
Maybe it should.
They're still making cold hard cash while you eat it.

Good luck in life.

and cable companies make a ton of cash off of really shitty internet service with slow speeds and data caps and they refuse to upgrade their networks. but a lot of people like the internet and use their service daily and the matter of the fact is it made lots of fucking money.

they don't care there are a few outliers who think they service should have more or is shit.

It'll be interesting to see what becomes of minecraft in the next few years, I agree with squeegee about the previous broken ass development process. Forever small improvements and additions that really didn't add much fun to the game completely broke a bunch of other shit, for me it was horribly frustrating to experience a game with so much potential just get almost abandoned yet still get fucked over and over. At least Microsoft will do something with mine craft, it may not turn out well, but who knows, maybe they won't exploit the shit out of it.

i think a minecraft 2.0 made by a real studio would be wonderful. i remember talking to my brother about our shared disappointment with the development of minecraft (and subsequent abandonment) and we both agreed it's a fantastic tech-demo and that a future version of it will be spectacular. i mean minecraft game mechanics alone are really, really outstandingly different, but they just aren't enough by themselves.

it needs a procedural mission system or something to compliment the vast environment. I don't know if anyone here plays or played Elite Dangerous, but like minecraft it's also a "mile wide and an inch deep." minecraft would have failed pretty hard if not for multiplayer and emergent gameplay, which was great and what a multiplayer game should be. but, it's also hard to fully rely on others to provide you with entertaining and engaging content.

Day Z, or Rust or H1Z1 are great examples of how a lack of content can turn a sandbox into a piss poor experience for most players. without anything to do except survive it really became a drag, and the only fun was teaming up with other like minded people and make goals as a group. but, even then it was always super hard to DO that because groupin up wasn't encouraged by game mechanics or content, only by willingness to not grief. and that sucks.
