Topic: If the american confederate flag is unacceptable......

Anonymous A started this discussion 11 years ago #44,165

Then the Washington monument is unacceptable as well isn't it? Since Washington did own black slaves...

But the Washington Monument is a symbol of the penis, not of racial oppression.

@previous (B)

Honestly I'd like nothing more than to eradicate all of this Founding Father worship. Get rid of the Washington Monument. Get rid of Mount Rushmore. Remove Washington state from the mainland.

I can support that. Not that i care, but i just see the whole remove the confederate flag as a cheap moral feel good movement created by people who don't even have any sentimental value to that flag. Its like the north of america just decided to piss on the south of USA, yet are too stupid and dishonest to realize that's what they are doing.

I really don't care about celebrating these people who lived hundreds of years ago and just happened to be in the position of scrapping the articles of confederation and replacing them with something that, although it was revolutionary at the time, is mostly out of touch with our present needs in a government. I'm glad we have the right to live, but the amendments seem more important to me and some people just staunchly defend everything the Founding Fathers wrote to the point of fanaticism.

Like I understand that some people are reluctant to blast Washington for owning slaves because he was such a good guy, freed them afterward and everything, and while it may be true that in his day he was a real stand-up guy, we need to look at it from the standards of today when we think about celebrating him in the present era. If I went back in time, I wouldn't start beating him up, but in the present time, it's unacceptable to hold the Founding Fathers up as shining examples of freedom and democracy when their actions perpetuated a whole host of issues and violence that still have implications for black Americans.

@583,669 (A)
It's definitely a symbolic issue and there's a whole ton of hypocrisy on the part of the North. It seems like a lot of clueless white people want to remove the flag because they think it will solve racism. But the flag is still flown in places that didn't try to secede, so I don't really buy the whole historical argument. The flag functions more as a manner of intimidation.

The founding fathers of basically every country are respected because people enjoy living in that country. Even great black leaders like MLK jr did some bad things, and having statues of people and things dont equal worship.
Who would you rather have on Mount Rushmore?

True. Also, viciously murder any remaining descendants in public.
