Do any of the gun supporters REALLY think that if all of the moviegoers in that theater had had guns when the guy started shooting, that they would have safely stopped him? Or, more likely, would there have been people panicking and shooting blindly in the dark, causing a mass slaughter?

Possibly, but it's not these rare occurrences that gun owners think of, but rather the more common urban thug trying to rob you or rape your daughter. Theater shootings are exceptionally rare, also it's a bad place for a shoot out considering the lighting and crowded mass of people.
