Okay, my thinking is that it should either be--this or - that. Like a long dash is normally used without spaces, and a short dash has spaces. I also think that where the dash isn't connected, it looks silly to have two. So I end up using the - in writing without autoformatting. Please correct me. Thanks.

There's actually no convention on whether you need spaces inbetween or not, surprisingly. I just found this out. It's up to whoever is writing.
