I've always been opposed to bardolatry, having never really seen what was so earth shaking about Shakespeare (I do really like Hamlet, though, having lost my father as a child and then had my mom remarry I can really sympathize with Hamlet) but who will be the new bard in 400 years? From what I can tell Shakespeare in his own time was seen as a pretty good playwright but not, like, the second coming or anything. So who will it be? It would have to be a writer with a broad range. Much as I like to think of future English students lugging around leatherbound The Complete Works of Jerry Seinfeld he's too narrow as a comedian.

There's already something though called "No fear Shakespeare" where the plays are translated in modern English. Which is funny because Shakespeare's plays were cutting edge at the time of their writing. Will The Simpsons scripts be translated into future English? Will there be a Royal Moffat Society where Dr. Who and Coupling scripts are performed to critical acclaim in 2415?

How much of the appeal of classical plays and music is in the challenge of trying to get it "right"? Trying to reconstruct the pace and stage direction and costumes and whatnot? Moffat will have left behind not just scripts but actual recordings of his works being performed. There will be DVDs and .AVIs There will be no mystery, future English students will know exactly what it looked like. Would Beethoven's music be as exciting if he had left behind some tapes and CDs? In the absence of a "real" recording, everyone is free to try to get it "right" and make the the claim that their instruments or tempo or pitch is the true, authentic way and no one can be conclusively shown to be right or wrong. I think the mystery of trying to recreate what it sounded like in its time is a large part of the appeal.
