As the result of this paper, existing governmental policy was changed so that it

effectively eliminated federal and some states aid for indigent and imprisoned transsexuals. It had a further impact on private health insurance which followed the federal government’s lead in disallowing services to transsexual patients for any treatment remotely related to being transsexual, including breast cancer or genital cancer, as that was deemed to be a consequence of treatment for transsexuality.

– Transsexual, Transgender and Intersex History : Entry on Janice Raymond.

A very, very conservative estimate of the number of additional deaths that resulted is 50,000. The amount of additional misery – incalculable.

Sounds like they referring to both in order to get to the 50,000 deaths.

Oh thats kind of misleading. I'd like to see some articles about transwomen who have been turned down for breast cancer treatment. That sounds like a lie.

kinda like rejecting to pay for lung transplants for cigarette related emphysema.
did you know some alcoholics can't get proper treatment for renal failure because any treatment will just be a waste of time because they'll just drink themselves to death anyway?
pretty sure people are aware of the risks associated with hormone therapy when they are consulting with their doctors. What did they think, oh i'll just take them anyways (cause i do what i want) and someone else will just rescue me when i'm dying? i kinda doubt that, i'm thinking they knew the risks, accepted the risks, and lived with the consequences. especially the transexuals that died 20-40 years ago waaaaay before this whole social justice movement started screaming for special snowflake treatment and hand holding.

someone wants to be trans? fine. go ahead. but there are risks that you'll be accepting responsibility for? Oh, you don't want to accept responsibility for your decisions? that doesn't sound... reasonable. you can't just do what you want and assume others will be responsible for you. that's childish among other things. grow the fuck up and take responsibility for your actions, fucking millennials.

From what I've read these people were denied free healthcare, not denied any healthcare. Thats different. But for the record I think that both males and female should recieve comparative healthcare. Right now, males get the short end of the stick in that regard. These trans women were treated like men, and men dont get as many freebies.

if i smoke myself into cancer i have a right to be upset, i'm dying. but also i don't have a right to make myself a burden on everyone else because of my risky lifestyle choice. and i wouldn't expect anyone to campaign on my behalf that it's somehow not fair that i shouldn't be able to make those choices and not live with the repercussions.

Being trans isn't really a decision, m8. They, basically, have a strong compulsion to try and make that change, it's not something they just dumbly decided they'd like on a whim.

Now, before you say anything, of course I agree it's important to research extensively before entering into such a complex medical procedure, yet it's not exactly just done on some dumb whim either.

Didn't see this before, but you can't really call being transsexual a "risky life choice".

no. but choosing to alter your body chemistry with hormones that are known to cause cancer in males is a risky choice. they don't need hormones like a diabetic needs insulin. they are choosing to take them fully aware of the risks and repercussions.

Then I would hope that the procedure has since improved, then. Because transsexuals are just going to keep going for that treatment.

Are people fully aware of the dangers of driving? I think they are and so if there is a car collision then the government shouldn't waste tax payers money by sending an ambulance after them. Because apparently that is just way too costly.

they don't. ambulances are private companies and if you are picked up in one you are billed for it. insurance certainly covers it though, and we pay premiums for a reason!

males taking estrogen have a higher risk of cancer. by making the choice to have estrogen administered, they are making a choice to accept the elevated risk of dying prematurely.
and transexuals have existed for quite a long time through history without taking estrogen supplements, you can't really argue that their survival is dependent on it like a life saving medication. it's not. it's a choice. and they are free to make it! but they can't hide from the consequences.

why are you strawmanning my argument into one about fucking cars anyway? we're talking about hormone injections causing cancer. You're talking about accidents and i'm talking about willfully and deliberately injecting oneself with a carcinogenic hormone.

it would be most humane to not allow people to disfigure themselves and give themselves cancer and then throw themselves on the pity of others.

Cars can crash and do crash. People willingly drive them anyway. The reason i am pointing this out to you is to make you realize that there is an ideal, its called morality but not economics.

@previous (squeegee)

so that is what its all about? Its really you just not beliving that transsexualism is a thing?

squeegee replied with this 11 years ago, 14 minutes later, 7 hours after the original post[^] [v] #580,098

@previous (H)
i do believe it is a thing, but that maybe injecting people with cancer and mutilating their bodies isn't the best way to deal with it. medically.
but i'm not in charge so it doesn't really matter what my opinion of transexualism IS. people can do whatever they want, but asking everyone else to make a sacrifice so that someone can do something harmful to themselves seems like an odd medical treatment if you ask me. but i won't stop them if they decide to make the choice to do those things.

but putting a needle in your ass and injecting yourself with estrogen to look more femenine IS a voluntary cosmetic medical treatment. and if it can cause cancer then it shouldn't be given as a first option kind of therapy. in my opinion.

Sure they've existed before, but only recently has this treatment become available. As it so directly treats their problem, then of course it's going to seem like a big priority to many of them.

Also, I never said they shouldn't accept the risks, or anything. My initial objection to your post was that you seemed the be implying that they had flippantly made the choice on a whim.

@previous (The Owl !KThEOwLwbU)
Eugh. What, did they have a HDTV in there for you to watch during the ride? Maybe a massager built into the bed and a fully stocked and staffed bar off to one side?

often times a call to emergency services scrambles police, fire and ambulance. just in case. i don't exactly know why ambulance service is privatized. but depending on the situation you're not necessarily responsible for any charges. If you're like in a wreck and are unconscious (or even properly unresponsive) then you'll still get a bill but you can just not pay it. but like you have to make the argument, i think, of either financial hardship or something like you didn't give consent and therefor can't be held to the charges (or something.) usually though insurance covers it. i was in a wreck once and they called me unresponsive (cause i was new to town and couldn't answer the "what's your address question" and was legitimately dazed) and they were required by law to load me up and run me to the ER. i DID get a bill, but insurance did cover it. If i was broke and penniless then you go down to admin and tell them and they put you on the "poor man's insurance plan" which is basically where the hospital writes off the expenses and you go about your merry way. of course you have to be eligible for that (re: poor) and also not have insurance. hospitals (well, public hospitals anyway) can't deny treatment just because you can't pay. they do just write it off, but also that's in part why insurance is a huge thing over here because the way hospitals bill insurance and do their write-offs it's all really weird and somehow subsidized as well (i think maybe that's what the tax write-off technically do is subsidize poor man's emergency healthcare.)

So you can totally get emergency care for free here, it's required by law to attempt life saving measures regardless of being able to pay for it. of course this is only the case in emergencies and doesn't actually apply to chronic illnesses or diseases that imminently threaten your life.

but if you're bleeding out or are having a heart attack or stroke or something like that then you're good to go. at least until you're stable.
