Topic: The Origin of Species

I read the introduction to this book by Charles Darwin since Google Play has it for free.

In this introduction he means the competing theory that species are individually created.

Now this bogged my mind a bit as it made me wonder... intelligent design couldn't have been the only theory as to the origin of species before evolution was determined, could it? Surely, there had to be other lesser known and less accepted theories, right?

Was intelligent design really the only theory about the origin of species before evolution?

Spontaneous generation was one of the lead contenders prior Pasteur's experiments. The Chinese had some interesting (though improbable) hypotheses, and you might also like to take a look at the theories of Democritus and his followers.
