Unless it has a receipt or anything printed on it it will be very hard to tell how old the actual computer is, since it is just a collection of parts of varying age. You could look in device manager and look up various parts (cpu, gpu if it even has one, memory, display/monitor, network adapter)

First thing I would try is the model number, which will at least get you down to a couple of years. Often, cases and other components (like fans, power supplies, RAM) will have a date code which should get you to within a year.
If it's made by a major manufacturer, you could write to their customer service department with the serial number and ask if they have any information.

@578,287 (Metæ) Usually Power supplies have a clear date manufactured stamp. They contain the only parts that will Expire and cause total fail one day in future. Electrolytic capacitors. The paste inside will dry out one day.
I wood look for that date as well as the part number on the hard drive. Look up of hard drive will tell you the year that drive was made.

In the history of electronics Power Supplies have the highest fail rate. Power supplies for computers even more so because they use switching technology which means a hell of a lot of parts to do a basic simple job. Switching the power lines with Transistors and the shit that can come through a power line leads to a high fail rate.
On a personal note my experience with computers at home - More hard drive fails and so far not a single power supply. But out in the field many a lap top provided by clients have failed do to power supply. Also many a hard drive fail and often one can hear the bearings start to whine.
Bang on that old thing - can also be a simple flow solder joint that has cracked. If the first bang no work try a big hammer
