I've wanted to give it a try, because I think I could meet all the requirements, but just barely, and it wouldn't be worth all the hassle. They are very strict and want to know your entire family's medical history, your education history and GPA, your career and income, your height and physique, everything. You could argue that the things they base it on aren't genetic and that that's not fair, but they don't care. If the sperm recipient says that want a donor who's a doctor who's at least 6 feet tall, they go by that demand. Also, if you do get accepted as a sperm donor, it's not a one time thing like giving blood. You basically sign a contract where you give sperm once a week for six months. Also, you're not allowed to masturbate or have sex in between donations because they don't want you to lose any of your potency. If you meet all the requirements, and you're willing to sign the contract and go through with the hassle, and you're willing to give up sex completely during your term as a sperm donor, you can make a lot of extra money with very little time taken out of your schedule. It is a pain in the ass though.

I've also heard you can only donate so many times. Is that true and is there any way for them to check this? I assume there's no central database for this type of thing

It's just like a job interview. You sign off giving them the right to do the background checks they do just like you do with a potential employer. They require that you are able to provide the medical history they want to know, which is usually the entire medical history of your father and grandfather and sometimes uncles and your mother and people on her side to make sure there are no genes in your family that could make you more prone to diseases. Then they want to know your height, job, education, income, and all that shit, and like I said, even though that's not fair because that's not genetic, that's the sort of stuff the bitch recipients ask for so they have to give them that to look good. Then they have to test your semen for volume, sperm count, virility, etc. Then if you're a candidate, you can sign your semen and sex life away for the next 6 months and make an extra $500-$2000/month or something like that. So like I said, it is a shitload of money compared to the amount of time put into it, but it is a hassle and takes some sacrifice and most men don't even qualify.

Confidentiality is important to the recipient because there are laws that say it's not your child and they don't want crazy donors tracking you down. They do give them a lot of information about you, but it's still anonymous.

I'd probably find it a bit uncomfortable. And also by asking the company when they turn 18, they have a legal right to know:
my physical description (height, weight, eye and hair colour)
the year and country of my birth
my ethnicity
whether I had any children at the time of donation, how many and their gender
my marital status
my medical history
a goodwill message to any potential children
identifying information (my name, date of birth and last known address).
