I think that, at times, they would do well to remember the expression "you don't need to be a carpenter to criticise a table".
It seems a popular idea on Tumblr's social justice scene to declare that anyone outside of certain groups categorically cannot have an opinion on said issues relating to said groups, due to a lack of insight. For me, this often goes too far and just reinforces an idea of divisiveness and difference between groups rather than one of unity and togetherness. True, a straight man has not had the same life experiences as a gay man, yet you don't really need to be gay to reliably discern if something is homophobic.

There's a lot of qualifiers and disclaimers and stuff I gotta put with this post and I can probably explain it better overall when I'm more awake but it's more like the difference between a person who studies something at a doctorate level and someone who took a community college class? Yes, someone who took a community college class on it can give a satisfactory answer, but if it was disputed, which - in the case of homophobia - it often is, the person with the doctorate-level knowledge of the subject is going to have the final say.
And now for some disclaimers: that's not saying Tumblr users are at a doctorate-level of understanding sociology, critical theory, or psychology, nor am I saying haven't been wrong before - they most definitely have and they will most definitely continue to be wrong. I don't know if it ever made its way into the public consciousness but there was that infinite chocolate fiasco.
My train of thought is a mess and I should probably go to bed soon but at the same time, duty calls.

Sure, I think it's reasonable to say that, in that analogy, the gay guy would have the greater insight into matters. I'm just concerned that sometimes the mentality is taken to far, to the point that people are sorted into distinct categories not dissimilar to how a bigot would divide people up.

That is called Standpoint Epistemology in academic circles. Feminist philosophy is a little...unusual in that it for the most part tries to develop a framework consistent with certain sociological/psychological principles and doesn't engage with a lot mainstream philosophy. That's not to say it's wrong, just that it starts out from a different place from most philosophical inquiry. For example, the biggest problem in contemporary mainstream Epistemology is the Gettier problem, in which the traditional conception of Knowledge as JTB (justified true belief) is shown to be inadequate. There are all sorts of responses to this, and philosophers are working on hammering out exactly what a good Gettier condition would be, or what a good alternative definition of Knowledge is. The person who figures out a good way to address it would be the biggest name in epistemology currently, and yet for the most part Feminist epistemologists...don't really care about it. That's not to say they have never written about it, but whereas it is priority #1 for epistemologists generally, it's a fourth or fifth tier priority for Feminist epistemologists. (Also I find their responses to be pretty weak/not on point generally)

Ok. I mean even among feminists it is not considered "the best" theory, and there are Feminist grounds for doubting its usefulness or accuracy. Why this one theory is suddenly seen as so popular is confusing to me but it isn't new and it isn't particularly...impressive. There's nothing wrong with thinking it's off-base bud.
