Topic: Is talking to yourself a sign of insanity?

hater !JGlOo5d1iU started this discussion 11 years ago #43,682

I used to only do it when alone, now I do it while at work. I don't want to do it, stuff just comes out and if I do it once, I tend to follow up with more in an attempt to mitigate the earlier craziness even though it only ever makes me sound more crazy.

The stuff I say has no relation to anything sometimes, other times it's connected to thoughts I had in my noggin.

I tried googling but I figured id ask the experts directly.

get a tape recorder and carry that fucker around and get used to recording random things on it. you'll still look kinda crazy, but less crazy. you might also stop muttering to yourself and start actively pulling out the recorder when you want to do it. Then you can make the choice to record something or to not do it. idk. just thinking out loud here. i sometimes like to have full-on conversations with myself in the car, especially if i'm trying to work something out or want to "talk things out to clarify things" for myself. i can't tell you how many times i've been driving to work and arguing with myself about something or explaining something to myself when BAM it sparks a eureka moment as a realize something i wasn't really aware of before.

also it can help me take a really complex situation and "explain it" to myself until it makes sense out loud, then i can explain it to other people easier. idk.

it doesn't make you crazy unless you're talking to a voice in your head you don't control, i suppose.

Get a Bluetooth headset. You are no longer insane.

yeah, but if it's all quiet and then you hear someone mutter something to themselves and you look up and they have a headset on but aren't having a conversation you can tell they are talking to themselves. If you have a tape recorder and someone hears you say something to yourself and they see you they might just wonder why you needed to remind yourself that, "batman could never kill superman, that's stupid." they'll think you might be weird, but not insane.

Batman could potentially kill superman, if he had the right tools, and the element of surprise.

It's healthy, normal and actually good for you.

nah. the way i figure it is if superman would just kill people instead of pulling punches so he doesn't kill them then he'd win every fight, every time.

all he really has to do is use his laser eyes more effectively. if he can see you he can kill you just by squinting a little.

failing that he can go into orbit and super accelerate himself and crash into the ground anywhere near where you're standing and kill you with a shockwave.

also superman always has the option of tossing a few large city sized asteroids at earth and cause global extinction. really all he needs is one though. then he could go live on the moon.

Or Batman could have Clark Kent shot outside his house by a man he doesn't know (and neither does Batman).

It has come close in the comics before. Just recently, Batman held off a crazed Superman off using a giant robot, before incapacitating him with some kryptonite gum. Probably could've killed him at that point if Batman wasn't trying to keep Superman alive.

True, Superman isn't making full use of his abilities at all times. But then, it would be boring if he did.

@previous (Metæ)
This sheer humour here is that Clark is bulletproof. The bullet would merely bounce off, a best ruining Clark's shirt.

@OP
> I used to only do it when alone, now I do it while at work.

Yeah, I do it at work a lot. If I'm coding or working Photoshop I will talk about what I am doing, openly criticize my methods of accomplishing some effect, and generally comment on what I am doing wrong and how I could do better things if I tried. :/ And then I try to explain how I'm on a deadline and I'm cutting corners because it's not going to fucking matter anyway. So lots of little aspects of personality (tulpae?) reply. And I talk with imaginary people criticizing my work. Yes, if I had endless time and complete control over this project, then I would do it this way. But I don't.

And then I delight in frustrating them by doing shit differently. I have friends. I'm not crazy. I understand that I'm "talking" with a more critical version of "me". I think it still helps. I think it may be psychologically healthy in that you are projecting potential responses to your actions and trying to understand them. (because, you know, empathy and all that) You are mentally creating other peoples' responses before they happen. Which is useful. Prediction based on experience is, in essence, how we "see into the future".
