The default spacing in Microsoft Word is entirely too narrow. I started using 0.1 character spacing in my documents awhile ago, and it has made an incredible difference in readability. If you look at a document with default spacing and the same thing in 0.1-0.2 spacing, you will notice a big different. It is so much better.

It's pretty bad. I started using Matthew Butterick's ideas and my documents look much, much better. I think it's still possible to put out professional-looking documents from Word.

Zoom in. The left column has letterspacing that fucks with reading comprehension by making the visual pattern and contrast between stroke (black) and whitespace less consistent.

It's probably more noticeable to a trained eye. There is a difference between looking at the letters and looking around the letters for the patterns of visual repetition.
I think the easier example to see is in the word "himself." In the default spacing example, the horizontal space between the strokes of the em (M) character are different than the space between the letter sequence h-i-m.
To be clear: it's subtle and few people will consciously notice. Some of the most successful typography considerations are nearly invisible on purpose. (I have a design BFA and spent years training on this stuff)
