Is it unhealthy to reject the Self? Is this part of what Buddhists do?

Shut the fuck up, Syntax.

@OP
That's a good question. Psychology is very Western-oriented, isn't it.

Not so much these days, arguably. Psychology has very much embraced the "eastern" idea of the mind and body being strongly connected rather then sticking to the "western" idea of them being seperate things.

I used quotation marks, since it's a factual thing rather than just a cultural outlook. Like, it wasn't just a cultural shift, hard evidence from research pushed it that way.

So I read up on this a tiny bit. As I understand it, rejecting the self is rejecting the idea of one unified consciousness, right? The idea that what we perceive as human consciousness is a combination of different things working together?

In this country, psychology actually recommends something called mindfulness, which was derived from Buddhism, as a treatment for patients suffering from chronic pain. A part of it is recognising that your body is linked to your mind, and that you can actually separate yourself from your own thoughts. Given that it's used like that, I doubt that Buddhist teachings on the self really cause any psychological problems like that.

It's kinda like the free will issue. One can recognise that it is mostly, or even perhaps wholly an illusion, but we can operate as if we have it just fine even with that knowledge.

Uh, no. Yeah, we're actually on quite good terms. Sorry for that outburst.

What i know from popular culture, Buddhists always talk about separating from the Ego. However when seen in a Freudian way, the ego is perhaps a very important component in our life. There are 3 components in us, the id, the ego and then the super ego.

The id is about primal desires such as sexuality and playfulness, the super ego is about beliefs and ideology. The ego is about moderating these two drives. When buddhists talk about eliminating the ego, they are really talking about eliminating the id. The id is structured like a language and Buddhists typically meditate in a so called mindfulness which means to be passive when it comes to the id.

It's strangely difficult to compare Buddhist ideas with Freudian ones. Freud saw the self as made up of complex forces and sought to dissect motivation based on that. Buddhists are generally seeking an understanding of self that is totally different than an explanation from parts. There are many different flavors of Buddhism that generally seek to rationalize the idea of "self" with the world as a whole and see the "self" as just another part of it. Freudian psychology, on the other hand, seeks to rationalize the self within the individual, taking certain aspects and thoughts as different "pieces" of one's self. Buddhism seeks to make an individual part of a larger whole whereas Freudian psychology seeks to make an individual out of parts of a different whole. I don't think you could compare two more disparate ideologies.

tl:dr: Read some Jung or something.

Even though i find myself not fully understanding your post because of my own lack of reading comprehension, i am very against it all. It is as if you are indifferent and dismissive yet supportive of Buddhism, i have nothing against Buddhism (not really knowing fully what it is) but i find myself disgusted by the idea of removing the Ego from ourselves. Our ego is a strange thing and very complex, when the monks talk about ridding themselves of the ego, all obervations point to the fact that they are really ridding themselves of the id and super ego rather then the ego itself.

That's called Dharma.

I think anon F was talking about a shared cumulative consciousness that we don't have immediate control over.

You may be taking Freudian psychology a little seriously. It's quite outdated, by now.

I do respect him as a trailblazer for psychological studies, but I think that a purely Freudian approach is an overly restrictive way to analyse these things.
