Uhhh depends on your gender, height/weight, fitness level, but a good place to start imo is with buying/using a pedometer of some sort and tracking your steps. 10,000 per day is a solid goal and good starting target.
Don't leave diet out of the equation, though. And try to add in some light jogging. Check out couch to 5k, for real.

Ok thanks. DO you think, say, 30 minutes a day of brisk walking is good? I will get a pedometer. Meow

Yes, 30 minutes is good. 45 is better. Also, cutting back on drinking your weight in cheap wine every night helps too.

Your diet is the most important thing when losing weight.

30 minutes per day is great. Try for more. A good rule of thumb is that every mile walked is about 100 calories. I have walked 13 miles per day, just about every day. It's fun! Humans were meant to walk. I'm 6'4" and weigh in at 150-160. :/ Scarecrow for life! (Honestly I can't change!) If I start eating more, then I start to actually lose weight. If I start trying to gain muscle mass I do gain weight, but I don't look like I am gaining weight; I gain muscle, but it's long stringy muscle that surprises everyone when I'm able to pick up heavy things even though I look like a fucking weakling. "Wait, you can help lift a car with those sticks? You look like a hobo who just fell off a train..." :/

Any activity that you do while not eating will be beneficial.

Just a solid walk around the block each day can get you started. Just start doing something even if it's a walk after dinner or going for a walk in a local park. Just start doing something that is in that direction, and you might start doing it more. It doesn't have to be power walking or jogging or running; just going for a walk for 30 minutes is great exercise.

because of the calories

It depends if you do any other physical activity. If you sit on your fat ass all day a brisk walk won't get you "in shape" but it might slow your gradual morbid obesity
