it's excellent! it's also a full blown series with several books and more on the way. not only that but it's the source material for the Expanse, a new show on scyfy that'll be starting in december. so far i'm hooked, it's based 200 years in the future so space travel is slow but there are around 50-100 million people living off Earth. Mars was colonized by Texans and so now all martians talk like me. it's great.
there's no "warp drives" or other sci-fi magic, just fusion engines and other powerful drives that accelerate them on long voyages. no aliens to speak of other than the non-earth born human variety. there's pirates and police and wealthy corporate royalty, there's racism and classism and floating derelict hulks and awesome descriptions of life in mechanical and artificial environments. there's earthers and belters and martians and it's really been a good read so far.
so if you're into scifi stuff this looks like a pretty good series to start digging into. i am so fucking stoked that there is so much really good sci-fi going around right now and that it's coming to all different media! it has all the making of a show that'll trump Battlestar Galactica as the best sci-fi series of all time

so it's gotten pretty damn good. i'm about 1/3 of the way through. it remains very "gritty" and doesn't fudge the realities of space travel too much. and it's only a little bit cliche, there's an alcoholic detective that's kinda the steriotypical drunk cop guy - he used to be good, now he's drunk and slow. but he's pretty cool and his character lives in a very unusual place, so the descriptions of his environment are awesome fun.
it's better than Dark Matter and Killjoys by a long shot. the story is pretty novel, and doesn't involve amnesia or any other silliness. if they remain true to the sourcethen the show should be great!
