When I was in 10th grade, the boy who sat behind me in English tapped on my shoulder and asked if he could borrow a pencil. I said sure and handed him what I thought was my pencil case. Only when he opened it did I realize that I had just handed him the travel makeup bag that I kept tampons and pads in. 15 year old me was very embarrassed about my period and I whipped around with tears gathering in my eyes to grab the case back from him. He just smiled and said “Don’t be embarrassed. It’s a natural part of life. I have a sister, so I’m used to it.” And then he gave me a pack of Skittles he found in his backpack. I need feminism because I wish more guys were as kind and understanding as him. I’ll never forget you, Matt.
