Topic: I'm undecided about which new scifi series to watch

Ive watched both episodes of Dark Matter, its good, like the A-team in space. I've watched most of Killjoys, twice, but it always craps out when I try to stream it, that looks less appealing to me but I have to give it a chance because bounty hunters. I havent seen Humans, but I'll watch it soon, that has a Blade Runner replicant thing going on which should be good. I haven't seen Sense8 but it struck me as kind of dumb so I let it pass by. There are probably others, but these couple of series are starting at the moment.

Mr Robot looks awesome too, but I'm not so sure that it counts as scifi.

TV doesn't watch itself, and I will probably only watch one of these series, so have any of you seen them or have any thoughts on them so far?

I don't know any of those, but I will probably check out dark matter so thanks for that. I haven't really seen any good sci-fi shows lately unless you count the comic book ones. Been rewatching fringe though which is amusing.

i'm about to watch Dark Matter. What's that one that looks really good, it's like on Scyfi channel and i think it's not out yet. but it's like a huge scifi space opera kinda thing. the special effects look really good, like battlestar galactica good.

it's called the expanse or ascension or something.

edit: okay, it's not ascension, i've seen that one, it's like only okay. it's probably the expanse that looks really epic. ascension is like... i mean it might as well just be another "survivor show."

you might check out Defiance, OP, it's about aliens coming to earth or something, i've not seen it, but apparently it ties into a video game or something?
It's the middle of the 21st century and there are new rules and a completely altered landscape on Earth after three decades of alien races arriving on the planet. Mysterious Nolan and his charge, Irisa, come to the town of Defiance, located atop the ruins of what was St. Louis, in an attempt to keep things in order as humans and aliens try to coexist. Events occur that threaten to disrupt the peace the town has fought to establish. In what Syfy is calling a first-ever convergence of TV and online gaming, each happening -- both in the show and in the companion video game -- affects what happens in the other medium, and the two evolve together as one story.

idk, it's really not my thing, i prefer off earth sci-fi and this reminds me too much of the old TV show Alien Nation that was more soap opera than scifi show. i mean they should have just made the aliens somali immigrants for all it mattered they were extra-terrestrials. oh yeah, and it's a 90's style buddy-cop show... lol, it was terrible, just awful.

yes, long time ago and also more recently on netflicks. it didn't make any sense then and it doesn't make any sense now. i only watched it because of the "significance" it's supposed to have, but even after reading some interpretations of it it still seems to me that David Lynch just does random meaningless shit and let's people project whatever they want to imbue it with meaning. if you haven't seen Lost Highway, it's fucking pointless.

i've not heard of it

so yeah, i'm just not big into horror or like slasher stuff or paranormal whatever. but i like the movie Alien, which was pretty much just a monster movie and i think killer androids and stuff are neat, so i can totally enjoy that kind of stuff it's just i don't necessarily like magic, the paranormal, or just "the unexplained" in general. Especially if they are attributing the unexplainable phenomenon as ghosts or something from a fairy tale. but like super-science physics shit like "warp field converters" or what the fuck ever is fine by me. And so are aliens, which are like ghosts from the future. so i dunno, all that stuff is related in a lot of ways. i guess i just don't like the aesthetic of paranormal shows. idk.

yeah, but i don't know much about them. usually i give a show i might be interested in 3 episodes before i quit it. lots of shows i just don't think will be good so i wait to see if it gets popular and survives more than one season. orange is the new black is a good example of that.

mostly i hate sports, like a lot, so i loathe to see sports on tv disrupt regular viewing. i really hate that shit.

i really disliked Fringe when that was new, but also i haven't "watched tv" in years so i just cherry pick my shows. haven't had cable in a while.

i fucking hate reality shows and competition shows and all that crap. i now hate almost all discovery and history channel content.

i didn't like the tutors, even though i hear it's really good. i found it dry and dull.

i hated 2 and a half men and do hate most sitcoms. i generally dislike procedural cop/lawyer shows but if i get in a mood for it i might look for something like the Wire, but i don't like most any other.

movies i may give 15 minutes and if it's boring me i'll stop it. i usually don't stomach stuff i dislike entertainment wise.

but yeah, plenty of stuff to hate, plenty of stuff like.

oh yeah, i hated deadwood, which a lot of people loved. i found the dialog annoyingly inauthentic. unwatchable.

I tried to watch Girls but I couldnt finish the first episode. I also dont like to watch any sports besides figure skating, Ninja Warrior, Iron man competitions, or lumber jack competitions.
I also dislike most shows on USA. Specifically Burn Notice, Royal Paines, and White Collar.

never tried to watch girls. i saw the trailer and it didn't do anything for me.

I thought about watching burn notice because i watched Chuck and it wasn't awful (just campy and silly) and when it was over i wanted to watch more stupid spy stuff, but i think burn notice takes itself too seriously. idk, it just didn't appeal to me so i haven't even given it the three episode treatment. never watched royal pains or white collar. USA is generally real low budget stuff and they always want to do big budget shit, and it shows. poorly.

no, he pretty much just films random shit and let people project on to it whatever they want. several key sequences, such as the one with Killer Bob at the foot of the bed were accidents that happened during filming and lynch said, "i like it!" and then made up some random shit about the backwards speaking house and all that garbage to support it in the narrative AND it allowed him the opportunity to use his phonetically spoken reverse speak weirdness that he'd been experimenting with since eraserhead. it was random nonsense and saying it's about the "atmosphere" is the same crap they say about any surrealist that tries to do Pop Art, like TV shows and feature films.

just because it was bad doesn't mean it didn't have anything to contribute, but, it was cancelled for a reason. it was awful.
and by that i mean like even the acting was off putting. Lynch's work is about soap opera quality work. the only reason it's considered anything but bad is because david lynch is a "crazy artist guy" who makes the "wackiest shit."

blue velvet made sense! it was an actual film. eraser head was an experiment that hardly anyone would fund and can be appreciated or at least well regarded as some form of artwork, but it wasn't a watchable film to be consumed by audiences. neither was lost highway.

we'll see what they do with his twin peaks reboot. i bet they just let him do whatever he wants. it'll be fucking trash, calling it now.

i can see how it wouldnt be someones cup of tea but the acting is supposed to be offputting. if you went into twin peaks expecting home improvement or some shit like that i dunno what to tell you. because it does have its flaws, and lynch does tend to be a very "notice my direction" kind of director but it works because the way he directs fits the stories he tells. like i dont think hes the master of surreal direction but he does do it well. he's not kubrick but he's certainly not shyamalan.

imho people just make too many excuses for why david lynch is supposed to be good. he's ruined more movies than he's done well. even his big studio movie, "DUNE", he fucking butchered and that was right up his alley. he's really gone downhill since blue velvet. the one exception from his later career is mulholland drive, which is pretty great, but it's totally a much more refined styling and is mysterious and thrilling without being random and grotesque.

As a pretty big Frank Herbert fan, I actually liked Lynch's Dune even though it took some real big left hand turns story-wise. I see how general audiences could really hate that movie though.

oh, i make excuses for things i enjoy too. art is just an example of "one man's trash is another man's treasure," and that extends to the artist as well. Is he a trashman or is he an artist? people can only really answer that for themselves. Personally i see david lynch as hauling heaping piles of garbage bags around, but, i think that Sergio Aragones is one of the great illustrators of his time. Other people would say he's sloppy and worked too quickly, but he's well regarded as being influential. just like david lynch, films are probably better now because of him.

just like my alley is nice and clean because the garbage man.

thats my go-to example of his direction having a bleak feeling that contributes to the stories told, because it IS a coherent story. also, if you want a good laugh watch the straight story. if you know half the shit he puts out it's just amusing as hell to see the dissonance between that and his other works.

i've been watching Dark Matter, i'm all caught up on it. It's alright, it's just kinda cliche. i like it better than Kill Joys though, Kill joys is what i call "terrestrial sci-fi" which is "a future with space ships but where they manage to spend a majority of their time planetside." often in forests or pastoral locations or hanging out in warehouses. Dark Matter is much more "Spaceship sci-fi" because they spend a majority of their time hanging out on their spaceship. Also i think Kill Joys has the lower budget of the two. They both suffer from techno-babble and lots of technology is just magic. these things are forgivable, but i can't wait for a gritty space opera, and i think the Expanse if going to be it.

It's coming in december on sci-fi, and i've read the books. if they stay loyal to its themes then it's going to be excellent. Acceleration is a HUGE issue in the books, because dampening fields or whatever magic gets used in other shows doesn't exist. So going beyond 2-3Gs of acceleration you have to be buckled into a "Crash Couch" which is a seat specially designed to help mitigate Gs by gimballing around and it uses formfitting foam to conform to your body. at higher Gs it injects you with drugs to help prevent veins from collapsing by increasing blood pressure and all kinds of other shit, so traveling "fast" is incredibly difficult but can be done. still, at some point north of 12Gs your body would be crushed, so there are limits to what technobabble can save everyone. there's no "Turn on the Johnson array and flood them with tachyons" kinda stuff. There are caps on food and air and supply is a major theme as well, it's all very gritty and has a focus on the more realistic end of the spectrum.

can't wait for that one. i think it's the next best contender for dethroning battlestar galactica as the best sci-fi long form show.
