I've been testing a new feature to help reduce spam by certain users (UIDs solely posting matt/anti-matt schtick, stuff like that) which had the side effects some of you may have noticed. This feature is essentially shadowbans like they are done on other larger internet communities.
These bans are not easily noticeable for the user affected by them, their posts will remain visible to themselves but they will not show for other posters. The goal is to make it less obvious that they have been banned, which would cause them to drop their UID and switch to a new proxy. So far this method has proven fairly succesful.
Shadowbanned users their posts are still visible to moderators who have the option (and are encouraged) to approve any of them that are deemed non-shit.
These shadowbans will only be issued towards serial spammers, regular offenses will still be awarded with regular bans.

r04r are we ever going to have an ignore list that blocks by screen name? I would donate if that helps.

Why would you want that? You would be cutting out content on an already slow forum, also you could just not read posts by those you want to ignore.

For the comedic value. Besides some posters never entertain me, so I wouldnt be missing out on anything.

Was the problem really that bad?

Yes. And even if it's not, it's still a brilliant solution.

I think so. These people will mindlessly post Matt stuff all over the place, and are completely deaf to requests to stop. This neatly cuts them out.

Agreed. It's only Matts obsessed fan club that actively spam the forum. Now they can spam to their hearts content and not annoy anyone.

I don't really believe in the ignore feature. The current version only exists because anontalk had it and someone else copied it. With regard to filtering on usernames I am expecting that anyone who will be the slightest bit annoying will wind up changing their username constantly in order to avoid being ignored (and to be extra annoying). I once released a userscript as a trial of this feature, and that's exactly what happened.
That said if someone else is also interested I might put it on the todo list, but pretty sure this feature will wind up being shit.

Nope. I've been here since last summer.

Plus, it would do nothing against people who posted anonymously, as many trolls do.

It's painfully obvious when a topic is posted and hidden. Sometimes I'll see two light rows or two dark rows instead of the standard alternating pattern.
