Well, once it collapsed on itself there would still be enough mass to sustain fusion. There is a wonderful video by noted physicist, and guy kook should check out, Lawrence Krauss explaining this. I am actively trying to find it but I keep getting pulled aside by video search results like "Lawrence Krauss vs. Islam apologist" or "William Lane Craig embarrassed by Lawrence Krauss in debate" so it might be a while.
