The problem is a different view of what makes a fair society.
Your fair society I imagine is one where the more you work hard the more money you get to keep for yourself
A socialist fair society is one where everyone is supported in order that they might be able to live a happy life free of poverty.
To answer your question, because benefiting thousands with meaningful purchases such as healthcare, housing, food dole etc is more altruistic than benefiting one person with non-meaningful purchases such as a second house, sports car, 70" TV etc.
