I'm not sure, but this is a good question. I am certain that we have a lot of users here who lived in biblical times.

Isn't Syntax a Time Lord not ancient?
@OP
Have you looked in the Bible? I think there's a bit in Leviticus about how to treat slaves.

If the slave is a woman, a girl or a member of another ethnic group, you can do anything you want to them, including rape and execution. The Torah places no limitations on the exploitation of female or non-Hebrew slaves.
If the slave happens to be a Jewish male, you can beat him as savagely as you wish, as long as he doesn't die within two days. You also have to set him free after six years.
(Exodus 21:2)
However, if you give him a wife and she bears him children, the woman and her offspring remain your property to do with as you choose.
The male has no claim to his own family, but he can choose to remain with them as a slave for life by confirming this desire at a religious shrine.
(Leviticus 25: 44-46)
All round, sounds like a pretty sweet deal for the owner.
