I just watched that one.

It kind of feels like Game of Thrones except set in a prison instead of a Medieval world.
i'm halfway through s3. it's a pretty great show. it's the subtle humor i like best.

I might give it a go but its not like i am seeing anything encouraging about it. For example the name, orange is the new black? Hm, the google pictures just shows a bunch of happy women. Bunch of happy women + prison? I expect some mind dulling fictional tales of how being in prison is great and meaningful or something. Ugh.

It's a minimal security prison by the way, so don't expect any of the stories you may come to find in a maximum security one.
The flashbacks are the best part since the stories vary depending on inmates.
Most of the time nobody really wants to kill each other aside from a few psychopaths (Vee, you'll meet her in season two). You also get stories involving the staff too.

the women spend a lot of time complaining about how much it sucks and generally act depressed. but occasionally they'll do something that gives them a little happiness. like one chick reminiscing how she got 2 bags of cool-ranch Doritos for sucking a guards dick because she really loves ranch flavor and she really enjoyed the chips.
also there are quite a lot of PC challenging ideas thrown around. So expect a lot of themes around racism and feminism and shit, but, also don't expect the show to be PC or to be shoving PCness in your face. plenty of times it challenges the "PC idea" and presents an un-PC reality, which is nice.
example: a guard mentions all the women "sync-up" their periods and so once a month they have to "batten down the hatches" and suffer hormonal women. As he said it he was given
a look by other characters, a look that says, "you shouldn't be saying that and i'm uncomfortable because you are," but then several women are arguing and get in a fight and after it's broken up and the aggressor leaves a woman asks the other involved, "are you on your period?"
and she's like, "yeah."
and the other is like, "oh, that explains it."
so it's a subtle humor, and they do that with racist stuff all the time too. but it'll take you off guard sometimes, i figured it was a "women's show" that would be full of feminist themes and bad men and stuff, but not really. in fact some of the most devious and "bad" people on the show are the women. and not just the prisoners. so it appeals to a much broader audience than just women. but yeah, i waited till season 2 was over before i finally caved and watched it.
