i haven't watched the season finale yet. i think it's building up to a really epic finish rather than self contained story arcs. so his series is not self contined. as an example i'll use harry potter as a series of self contained novels. each book works independently from the whole. of corse it is best to read them all but one could read a single harry potter book and enjoy a story with a beginning a middle and an end that follows a more publishable (and filmable) format. SoIaF is really more like 1 long fucking book because you can't really pick up the later books and read them without having read the first books. so with harry potter you get basically 5 story arcs (1 for each book) with a mcguffin (literary device) to tie them together. loosely. martins books don't tie off as neatly so we don't really get as many proper "endings" as we get from an interpretation of the harry potter books.
so i think we'll get one big huge bad ass ending that finally delivers everything the story is working towards. until then though we're stuck with cliffhangers rather than finales.

you know, when it first started i gave it 2 episodes when it first came out and i thought it was stupid and bleak and i don't normally go in for fantasy. but then season 2 started and everyone was hyping it and a gave season 1 the entire season before discounting the show. now i am a ravenous fan. i does get better, but also the books are great. they are fucking dense as shit and long as fuck and you'll definitely slog through parts, but even chapters i was like, "oh shit, i hate this fucking character," i'd end up really getting into. and there are parts that are drenched in epicness that make the whole thing worth read. the books are better than the show, but, the show is pretty fucking great as well.
i recommend watching season one of the show, then reading the books because you'll be pretty into it if you like it at all. so it's a great way to kick off the denseness that is a SoIaF. it's a great way to put faces with the hundreds of names and hundreds of places that are mentioned in the book. and the seasons kinda parallel the books for the most part until season 4 and 5, they kinda blow through books 4 and 5 real fast. but, they are also kinda huge slogs and don't wrap up neatly like the earlier books. season one though, great finish.
