Topic: The thing about moral relativism and religious ideology
icelandguy !hqbnPC3Y7o started this discussion 11 years ago#42,948
Often i find my self arguing with atheists about moral relativism. Some atheists admit that basically its relative to whom you ask what is right or wrong but other atheists absolutely deny this idea. This thread isn't really about if or if not the idea is true but the implications of it.
If it is really relative to whom you ask then isn't it obvious that its up to faith to make people decide what is wrong or right? I think it is, i would see this as a crucial counter-argument against anti-faith/religion people. The argument is that as long as you believe in a right or wrong not relative to who you ask then you are guilty of belief.
The strange thing about it all is that the more fundamentalist a religious group is, the more they are totally opposed to the idea of moral relativism even if it paints faith in a different light. It makes me think that the fundamentalists do not really want to be fundamentalists but rather its seen as something they just have to deal with and that moral relativism is clearly something that comes into conflict with fundamentalism in that way. Moral relativism is not inherently bound with the destruction of all moral beliefs but only the destruction of moral beliefs you do not agree with and the creation of moral beliefs which you do agree with.
and what is your faith if any? You believe its bad to copy the ideas of others?

i dont have any faith, i'm one of those atheists you seem terrified of. no its not bad to copy others, but dont interpret it as the will of a higher being. just some person in the past who was a pretty popular guy

You don't have any faith? Do you believe its bad to lie? Is it bad to Lie that its the will of a higher being?
Anonymous B replied with this 11 years ago, 1 minute later, 18 minutes after the original post[^][v]#568,756
@previous (icelandguy !hqbnPC3Y7o)
i dont believe lies are fundamentally bad. its mean and other people may (severely) dislike you for it, so its probably not a good idea to go around doing it all the time but its not like anything bad will happen when you lie and noone catches you in it.
icelandguy !hqbnPC3Y7o (OP) replied with this 11 years ago, 2 minutes later, 20 minutes after the original post[^][v]#568,758
So i have your permission to lie about the will of the higher power?

@previous (icelandguy !hqbnPC3Y7o)
sure, you have my permission to do literally anything you'd ever want to do. you can lie all you want, i dont care. wont make it true, though. and if you do believe it to be true that makes you delusional, but that is still fine with me. its your life.
icelandguy !hqbnPC3Y7o (OP) replied with this 11 years ago, 1 minute later, 22 minutes after the original post[^][v]#568,760
Is it a lie to say that people should not rape children and that this is the truth?
Anonymous B replied with this 11 years ago, 1 minute later, 24 minutes after the original post[^][v]#568,761
@previous (icelandguy !hqbnPC3Y7o)
thats a subjective morality which happens to be the statues quo and i also just so happen to agree with it. im sure theres some people out there that believe its fine to do so. however the status quo dictates that this is bad thus they will be punished by this society if they happen to be caught.
icelandguy !hqbnPC3Y7o (OP) replied with this 11 years ago, 1 minute later, 26 minutes after the original post[^][v]#568,763
So if you believe its the truth that people should not rape children, are you not delusional? Aren't you believing in some kind of a truth which essentially is idealism?
Anonymous B replied with this 11 years ago, 1 minute later, 27 minutes after the original post[^][v]#568,764
@previous (icelandguy !hqbnPC3Y7o)
you seem to have misunderstood my previous post. i said it would be delusional to believe in your own lies. you then switched to debating morality which has nothing to do with lying.
icelandguy !hqbnPC3Y7o (OP) replied with this 11 years ago, 1 minute later, 29 minutes after the original post[^][v]#568,765
The reason it would be delusional is because there lacks evidence for a higher power, right? So in a world where its a fact that people do rape children, isn't evidence lacking for the idea that people should not?
Anonymous B replied with this 11 years ago, 1 minute later, 30 minutes after the original post[^][v]#568,766
@previous (icelandguy !hqbnPC3Y7o)
the only evidence is that we (well, most people) dont like it, mostly by being able to empathize with the victim. this is a feeling that most people happen to have, so they acted upon it and made it law. is this really so hard to comprehend?
icelandguy !hqbnPC3Y7o (OP) replied with this 11 years ago, 1 minute later, 32 minutes after the original post[^][v]#568,767
It is not hard to comprehend why it was made into law nor is it hard to empathize with the victims. But you see this is really something built on emotion isn't it? Not evidence. There is evidence that rape is harmful, but there is no evidence that people should not do harmful things.
Anonymous B replied with this 11 years ago, 1 minute later, 33 minutes after the original post[^][v]#568,768
@previous (icelandguy !hqbnPC3Y7o)
right, so what is your point? all ive been saying is that people dont like it and that this is all subjective morality. there is no absolute good and evil, it simply doesnt exist. just look at the animal worlds for plenty of examples of things that you might consider "evil" if humans were doing it.
icelandguy !hqbnPC3Y7o (OP) replied with this 11 years ago, 1 minute later, 35 minutes after the original post[^][v]#568,769
Well my point is this. If being what you called delusional, allows you to believe its the truth that children should not be raped.... then why on earth not be delusional in that particular way?
Anonymous B replied with this 11 years ago, 32 seconds later, 35 minutes after the original post[^][v]#568,770
@previous (icelandguy !hqbnPC3Y7o)
why do you need "faith" to believe that children should not be raped? do you lack the empathy to make this conclusion by yourself?
icelandguy !hqbnPC3Y7o (OP) replied with this 11 years ago, 2 minutes later, 38 minutes after the original post[^][v]#568,771
I have made this conclusion myself a long long time ago like the rest of us. However, if i were to demand evidence before believing, if i were to prioritize evidence, then that truth really falls apart because if its the truth that children should not be raped yet also the truth that children are raped.... then we live in a world not compatible with some aspects of truths don't we?
Anonymous B replied with this 11 years ago, 2 minutes later, 40 minutes after the original post[^][v]#568,772

all the evidence you need to decide if you think something is right or wrong is simply how it makes you feel. thats it. do some soul searching and you'll have all the evidence you need.
icelandguy !hqbnPC3Y7o (OP) replied with this 11 years ago, 1 minute later, 42 minutes after the original post[^][v]#568,773
soul searching and evidence? Don't you see that this is what leads many people to be religious or to stop being religious. Its the kind of evidence that relies on feelings but not knowledge.
So its puzzling to hear people tell me that i should put evidence before my own feelings, before my own soul.

you may be able to find evidence for certain things in the world. you seem be confusing morality with facts. morality is not based on facts, yet you seem to keep insisting that it is.
that said, i dont care if you believe in a higher power. i dont see why you would because there is no evidence that one exists (you seem to acknowledge this), but hey, if it makes you happy then by all means go ahead.
icelandguy !hqbnPC3Y7o (OP) replied with this 11 years ago, 1 minute later, 45 minutes after the original post[^][v]#568,775
Its not that i am confusing morality and facts. Rather i am doing what i am told, if i believe something to be truth itself (morality) then i should at least check how it compares to evidence.

doing what you're told? by who? live your own life, man.
but again, morality does not relate to facts (and evidence is the thing that supports facts). so repeating that point does not really do much.

I'm very tempted to start talking about how humans are wired to feel empathy, and the evolutionary basis for this. A perfectly scientific, atheistic basis for morality.
But, well, it's Iceland guy.
icelandguy !hqbnPC3Y7o (OP) replied with this 11 years ago, 1 minute later, 48 minutes after the original post[^][v]#568,778
Well that would be kind of silly of you. It would be like explaining why beliefs come into existance and expecting it to answer the question if or if not moral beliefs are truthful.

@568,778 (icelandguy !hqbnPC3Y7o)
there are very little absolute truths, and you seem to be confusing subjective and absolute truths. you are correct that not all subjective truths have evidence.
icelandguy !hqbnPC3Y7o (OP) replied with this 11 years ago, 1 minute later, 51 minutes after the original post[^][v]#568,782
So what if one's subjective truth is that one should be religious? Then its unreasonable to demand evidence?

then you should jolly go ahead and do that, as long as it makes you happy. like i said, i dont care if you believe in a higher power. but once again, some people are more picky on what evidence they want for the subjective truths that they believe in. I'll repeat the following in caps so maybe you'll read (and comprehend?) it this time: MORALITY IS NOT A SUBJECTIVE TRUTH. ITS A FEELING, AN EMOTION. BELIEVING IN A HIGHER POWER HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MORALITY. RAPING BABIES DOES HAVE TO DO WITH MORALITY. DON'T EVEN BEGIN TO COMPARE THE TWO AGAIN.

no it sounds like you are fucking retarded or have downs or something
Morality is not a truth of any kind. You don't have to know something to be true in order to feel that it is wrong. Do you *know* that it would be wrong to kill you? No, you don't. For all you know you might meet your higher power and wind up in some kind of blissfull afterlife. More likely you will just ceise existing, but noone in this world knows for sure. Yet you will still feel that it is immoral to go around murdering people. Hence morality is not related to truths.
Then there's what KL said and that is that we're just biologically wired to experience certain feelings which translates into morality because our brains are just that advanced.
icelandguy !hqbnPC3Y7o (OP) replied with this 11 years ago, 3 minutes later, 1 hour after the original post[^][v]#568,801
When you say it is wrong you mean it feels wrong don't you? Or do you mean it feels as if the truth is that its wrong no matter who you ask? If no morality is truer then another, then in what way does one choose what morality to have? It may be a horrible feeling to feel as if its the right thing to do to be loyal to your boss, but you do it anyway. So its not all feelings, its belief as well.
If morality is not truth of any kind then aren't you saying its not the truth that one should not rape children? Yes or no.

oh my god, do you even fucking read? i answered your question in my post:
> in order to feel that it is wrong
when you FEEL something it is SUBJECTIVE TO YOU. oh my god. you are stupid as fuck.
I am saying that there is no absolute truthful answer to your question. It doesn't exist. There is no universal truth. The answer isn't yes. The answer isn't no either. The answer simply doesn't exist. But I guess your brain will explode before you manage to grasp that concept. christ. i am done, you are too dense.
icelandguy !hqbnPC3Y7o (OP) replied with this 11 years ago, 3 minutes later, 1 hour after the original post[^][v]#568,805
So a human act, such as raping children cannot be considered truthfully forbidden. likewise then, a human act, to believe its the truth that one should not rape children cannot be considered truthfully forbidden.
So it remains, for some reason you think that when children get raped it isn't a matter of truth, its not a matter of if its wrong or not. No to you, its a matter of how people feel about it.
Why you would believe it? I don't know, i guess your subjectivity is just so fucked up.

you use the word forbidden. forbidden by who? forbidden by society? society can forbid anything they goddamn please. by your parents? they can also forbid whatever they goddamn please. any human can "forbid" anything they like, the question is if they are capable of enforcing it.
and yes, you just defined morality "its a matter of how people feel about it". That is exactly what the word means. You seem to finally have come to a sane conclusion. What more do you want?

You can believe anything you want. I believe raping babies is wrong. I also believe that you are a fucking moron. You are free to believe there is some old guy with a beard sitting in the clouds watching over you, I'm not going or even trying to stop you from believing you. You are also free to further base beliefs upon that, but it would be quite silly because it is proposterous that there is an old guy sitting in the clouds watching over you. But still: You can believe this. I cannot stop you, but I will laugh at you. This is all fine.
I'll finish with repeating one of my first points: The only truth that matters is the one that exists within you. Follow your heart, just ensure you are aware of the beliefs that your society holds so they won't wind up killing you for it (if you let them find out). That is all. Peace out, retard.

another example of the lack of truth in your heart. Man i feel sorry for you, your are hostile even though i just ask you questions which you don't even need to answer.
