Topic: "At least I got maced and not shot." - 10 year old boy after interacting with police officer.

vocalon !74TdoRkjCc started this discussion 11 years ago #42,835

Taye Montgomery, the 10-year-old boy allegedly Maced in the face by a police officer while peacefully protesting with his mother on Wednesday evening in Minneapolis, had a powerful response when he spoke to reporters on Thursday.

"At least I got Maced and not shot."

While Montgomery is biracial, he aptly identified the fears of many black males in America since the rise in racially biased police brutality, where white police officers often don't face criminal charges for shooting unarmed black men and boys.

Did this all happen because of racism or did the drug war create the racism?

why is a ten year old at a protest anyway? don't people watch the news, they can get real ugly real fast. kinda stupid to take a little child to a protest, there's just no reason to put them at risk. but a maced 10 year old sure does look good on camera and certainly helps further your cause, so, why not i guess.

i'm sorry, but y'all are blind to this new gay bigotry, obviously. no one should have "protected insults," and that's exactly what you're trying to do. it's like saying "nigger just means black, it's root word is negro which is black in many languages, so i'm just referring to his skin tone, not insulting anyone."

because 12-year-olds are shot and killed for no discernable reason other than triggerhappy police and phone-call happy white people and when shit like that COULD happen you gotta inform kids about it because kids are in danger

Rice's gun was later found to be an Airsoft replica, though lacking the orange safety feature signifying that the gun is not real.
you know what's really dangerous? letting your stupid ass kids run around with authentic looking pistols lacking the orange safety feature included on Airsoft Pistols so cops don't shoot kids. Why was it not on there, they are actually not easy to remove. his death tells me very loudly that his parents were irresponsible guardians and failed to keep him safe by allowing him to go unsupervised AND modify his air soft gun so it looks even more realistic. his death was a tragedy, a stupid, stupid tragedy, and the blame can be squarely placed at the feet of irresponsible parenting.

And i'll say it again, protests very often turn violent and are no place for 10 year old children, and you can inform kids about the dangers of the world without directly exposing them to said harm. the last thing people should be doing is placing their children in unsafe situations involving the police. And if it's a well known fact that "12 year olds are shot for no discernible reason other than trigger happy police" then why would someone take their child down there and place them directly in the cross-hairs. it's irresponsible, vocalon, because of the very high risk your child could be, idk, pepper sprayed or tear gassed or shot with rubber bullets or sand bags.

this was purely an issue of irresponsible parenting and a child being somewhere he should not have been. rather than take little children to dangerous and potentially violent protests parents should instead do stuff like teach their kids to play with toys that don't look like gang-murder weapons, or maybe teach them some responsibility like don't point even toy guns at the police. anecdotally i have a nephew who loves playing with toy guns, but he's not allowed to play with them outside and my brother actually uses it as an opportunity to teach gun safety. His kid is not allowed point his gun at people, only pretend bad guys. if they see him running around aiming his gun at and "shooting" people or animals he has it taken away. he ALSO is only allowed to play with guns in neon yellow and orange colors, his parents won't buy him the little black glock clone because it's fucking stupid to give that to a child. and it's even stupider to give them that glock and them them run around pointing it at everyone including cops.

guns are not toys, and i don't really understand why they keep making them into toys.

also, this:
Persons have to be at least 18 years old to buy, hand over or possess airsoft guns. They may be used on police-approved sites, with a permission slip, at the age of 16. A firearms certificate is not required. All airsoft guns have to be transported concealed in a bag or in the trunk etc.
so he was running around with something that he wasn't supposed to be carrying around outside and brandishing anyway, AND it's something that he's technically not even supposed to be able to acquire without parental help. So his stupid fucking parents got him a stupid fucking dangerous toy that wasn't age appropriate and THEN failed to supervise him while playing with it AND let him openly carry it outside of the house and brandish it like a real weapon. so...

you want a discernible reason, there you go. Never attribute to malice that which can be attributed to stupidity. sucks the kid died, but really, totally 100% on his stupid fucking parents. just like the idiot who's kid got pepper sprayed at a protest. that's the parents fault for being god damned retarded.

you havent realized racism and stupidity are synonymous yet have you

and y'know what? most of this is absolutely correct. it was irresponsible of his parents and its irresponsible of the child at the protests's parents but yknow what else is irresponsible? calling the fucking police on a 12 year old

squeegee replied with this 11 years ago, 8 minutes later, 1 day after the original post[^] [v] #568,008

@previous (vocalon !74TdoRkjCc)
you're again attributing to malice...

the gun looked real. people thought it was real. and how are they supposed to know he's 12 when they look out the window and see someone at the park pointing what looks like a real gun at people. You call the cops on that shit dude, maybe it's a crazy person or a kid who is playing with his dad's real gun. it certainly looked real. you don't know, and if he's brandishing it and pointing at people then you don't want to approach that shit. you stay inside and call the cops and let them come deal with it.

you act like people know everything, but they don't. everyone works with limited information, and in this instance you're assuming they knew he was 12 and carrying a toy and called the cops to what, come be dicks to him? no. Someone obviously was scared. They saw some person carrying around a gun and being threatening with it. That's what makes the whole thing so fucking stupid, that kids parents were letting him run around and scare people or at least TRY. If they had one fucking ounce of responsibility then he wouldn't have had the gun and no one would have called the cops on him.

it wasn't people calling the cops on a 12 year old, you fucking idiot, they were calling the cops on a pistol at the park. and that was the only real responsible thing any onlooker could have done. it was the most responsible thing anyone did that DAY was to call the cops on that shit.

okay yes, the situation was fucked up and his parents shouldnt let him run around with a realistic toy gun but consider why his parents shouldnt let him run around with a toy gun: because black people have been killed over less.

replica guns are not toy guns, they are hobby guns and don't have that retarded orange thing, because then they wouldn't be replicas would they

what? no, blacks being killed for whatever reason is not THE REASON kids can't carry around realistic looking guns. it's a bad idea becuase realistic looking guns look real, dangerous, and carrying one can get ANYONE killed, especially if they are waiving it around at people and looking threatening with what appears to be a real gun.

doing stupid shit is a bad idea regardless of the times blavks have been killed for less. if anything his parents should be MORE responsible becuase their kids ARE at a higher risk of being shot.

but don't imply that if it wasn't for discrimination kids would all be carrying around realistic looking toy guns.

Tamir Rice wasn't at a protest and his parents didn't give him the toy gun. As the article states, a friend had given it to him to play with only a few minutes before the shooting.

The article also states that police officer Timothy Loehmann was emotionally unstable and unable to follow orders. How responsible is it to hire a loose cannon without a proper background check?

Tamir Rice was a little boy playing in the park with a toy gun. Timothy Loehmann is a trigger-happy thug who will kill again if allowed to go free. The child will never pose a threat to society, but Loehmann most certainly does.

airsoft guns are not toy guns no matter how much you want to believe they are, they are replicas and there are laws that literally make them not toys. if you've never seen one they look exactly like their real counterparts, down to the stubbling on the grip and the detailing of the trigger guard. if i was walking in the park and pointing a gun replica at people i would 100% expect the cops to show up, and if they don't shoot me when i then reach for it then they are not doing a good job of being a smart cop. cops that take stupid risks don't go home, and their guidelines for the use of deadly force are totally different from civilians, but civilian rights do cross over. a cop does have the right to use force to defend his own life when the situation calls for it, and when Dispatch has told you about a juvenile waving a gun around at the park you enter the situation with a heightened awareness that your life is in grave danger. both of these cops are going to walk because they didn't really do anything wrong, and in another situation (had the gun been real and the threats been real) he would have been applauded for acting with such speed and decisiveness. the city will likely get sued over their hiring practices and someone will win money, but the cops aren't going to jail, neither one. probably won't be cops anymore after this though.
