Who else has been watching this season?
So far... (warning, spoilers, do not read if wish to avoid)

Jon Snow tried to negotiate an alliance with the free folk to combat the white walkers only ending in an assault by them. Daenerys Targaryen now has Tyrion Lannister serving as her adviser while Jorah Mormont is banished once again which sees him trying to regain her favor like a beta male. Queen Margaery Tyrell as well as her brother Ser Loras Tyrell have been thrown in jail as well as Queen Cersei Lannister by the church. The Boltons now prepare for Stannis Baratheon's march on Winterfell. Arya Stark continues her quest to become no one and serve the many-faced god. Her sister Sansa Stark is now married to Lord Ramsay Bolton. Petyr Baelish has plans to become Warden of the North. Varys' whereabouts currently unknown. Jamie Lannister and Bronn are currently in Dorne trying to bring the Lannister daughter home.

From what I gather so far, the show is about a king with a very ugly throne made out of swaords welded togother, and people come to look at hime and talk to him. Also, for some reason, there are dragons, so the historical accuracy is highly suspect if you ask me.

I quit watching the series, I'm gonna wait until it's entirely finished and then watch it. I've been working my way through the audio books and they are really fantastic, the guy reading them does a superb job. I'm on A Feast for Crows and just found out the last books are not even done yet. :(

And the TV series is more or less caught up with the books now.
Season 5 is covering both A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons.
I heard Season 6 was doing the same, but apparently that might actually be covering what George has already written for The Winds of Winter.
George has already said that the TV series and the book series now take place in two separate universes.

tonight's episode was great, the last 10 minutes was spectacular. also the TV show is covering stuff that's not published yet, fyi. there's still plenty of stuff left to cover, but you can tell they are skipping vast, vast swaths of book. they are also making small alterations, but tonight's episode covered material that's not from the books. either it was content that''ll be TV only and stuff that's not in the book (which there are some examples of) or they are covering stuff that's not published yet (which they said they'd totally do if they wanted to.)
anyway, good, good stuff. and there's still like 5 episodes left, drawing to a close would imply an episode or two left i would thing. right now i'd say this season is just starting to get exciting.

George R. R. Martin is still an executive producer so they cannot diverge too much. From what I heard they are merely going by notes written down for The Winds of Winter which George apparently said he wants to finish before Season 6.

I checked and there is only 2 episodes left.
The next episode is titled, "The Dance with Dragons" and the season finale is titled, "Mother's Mercy".

oh yeah, they do 10.
they won't completely diverge but certainly there are/will be differences. i've read the books so i know where all the characters are "right now"
and some stuff in the show tonight was either a "book spoiler" from the next book or they were scenes that will ultimately prove to be a departure from the books.
but, in more than one scene the show appears to have already bypassed the books in storyline. i'm betting the next 2 episodes contain some pretty good spoilers for the books. certainly they'll get cercei up to speed and that could be it's own finale, but i think we'll see the battle of Winterfell or at the very least it'll be a cliffhangar or something. it's kinda looking like pretty much all the story lines are catching right up to where a dance with dragons ends, but, there's been so much culled and so many characters lost from that book that i'm not sure who'll be doing the dancing, if you catch my meaning.

the tv show is diverging from the books. it's covering some stuff that isn't yet published, but sansa never got raped in the books. That was another character, but the show made them the one and the same for some fucktarded reason. And then another rape later in that same episode which I'm pretty sure also didn't happen in the books. No idea why they decided sansa should get raped, but yep.

yeah, they are sometimes rolling other characters into the main characters story. like with sansa how you mentioned, but if you'll remember from last season dario took on all the action that attributed to Strong Belwas in the books. supposedly they are doing that to "tighten up the story" and i can see why they did some stuff. take sansa for instance, in the books jeane poole was raped by ramsay and also she was posing as aria, this was all slightly confusing, and according to the writers they got rid of jeane poole and placed sansa in that role to help make sansa's story arc more meaningful on TV. probably in the books she's going to have a pivotal role, but right now with sansa in place of jean they have a ton of options for that character. maybe she kills ramsay, maybe she escapes to castle black. probably what we're getting is "accelerated sansa," or a version of sansa that that has a more important role earlier on than in the books. IN the books sansa is still with littlefinger in the eerie, we don't know what will happen to her. maybe little finger does end up taking her back to winterfell, we just don't know. So, maybe it was a complete deviation from the books, or, maybe it's happening in a slightly different order or just happening much faster. We'll see, but, martin has totally even removed entire major characters from the book (lady stoneheart anyone?) which probably means that the show will be similar "in spirit" but will deviate quite heavily to make it all work for TV. but, last night's episode was, in my opinion, material from an unpublished book. at least the last 10 minutes, and pretty much everything with tyrion hasn't happened yet. It'll happen in the books too, but, not quite in the same way. but, that being said, you're right, we are seeing a lot of deviations from the book now. what remains to be seen though, is whether or not scenes from last night's episode are a departure or just not published yet. some stuff, like the last 10 minutes, is a scene from book 6.

@previous (H) i'll have to re-read books 4 and 5 again, but i'm pretty sure the last we saw of john snow they had started moving all the wildlings south of the wall, and i'm probably wrong but i think they were planning some kind of an expedition up north. pretty sure john will go north of the wall at least once more and probably end up seeing a scene like the one from last night's episode. I know they aren't done "exploring" the north in the books, but, maybe in the books all of the rest of the "in the north" content will be from bran's perspective. But, there's still several places on the map that haven't been visited and i bet John Snow ends up heading north and seeing the wights and the white walker army. if not then it's an entirely made for TV scene. So far in the books the white walkers have barely been discussed, we know a lot more about them from the TV show than we do from the books. I think in the books it was only suspected that Valerian Steel can kill a white walker like dragon glass, because i know i heard that speculation a long time ago, but last night was the first real proof that anything other than dragon glass can hurt them. So even if we aren't getting full on unpublished scenes, we are learning new information. or having it confirmed anyway. but, i'm pretty sure that john is going to at least sword fight and kill a white walker with his bastard blade. and as far as i can remember the last we saw of john snow in the books he was positioned to head north or something like that.
