Topic: What triggers you?

The Owl !KThEOwLwbU started this discussion 11 years ago #42,296

Serious question

Mine is if people I respect and value insult or mock me. Also insects touching my skin.

Serious question: what exactly do you mean by trigger? How does it present itself?

What exactly are you defining as "triggering"? Something that causes you mild annoyance? Strong anger? Gives you a panic attack?

It gives me serious anxiety and panic attacks mostly

Takes me a long time to stop thinking about it and before I started taking medication it couls easily lead me into a spiral of self-loathing and suicidal thoughts although that's a bit better since then.

It's not just any knsult that does it, people here can say anything at all and it wouldn't affect me

It's when people I am emotionally invested in and kind of rely on for support, when they do it it's worse and sets me off.

It's really not fun at all and I wish I didn't have to deal with it

And the big one is spiders (I know they're not technically insects) but other large bugs do it as well, the smaller ones frighten me but they haven't left me feeling like the big ones do.

Trigger warnings were originally for returned veterans suffering from PTSD. Now they are for everyone that has feels.

Well then if we're defining being triggered as serious anxiety or panic attacks, then I've never really had anything provoke a reaction like that in me. Certainly nothing in my day-to-day life. Sure things can piss me off, but not so much that I'd call myself "triggered".

@561,651 (E)
Yeah, the Tumblr kids have certainly made the concept into a bit of a joke. I do think the word could see some use beyond veterans with PTSD, but things have apparently gone a little too far.

Is that a regular occurrence for you?

Anonymous G joined in and replied with this 11 years ago, 2 hours later, 7 hours after the original post[^] [v] #561,769

Seeing or hearing domestic violence
Being near angry strangers or manic women
Caregiving for a sick or injured person or animal
Threats of public shaming

When I acutely feel triggered I try to find a quiet space to meditate, calm down, and be mindful. Therapy, yoga, massages, and sauna visits all help me relax and feel present. If the triggered feelings are overwhelming then I tend to consume indica/sativa marijuana hybrids.

Long in-depth talks about sexual abuse set me off into intense-as-fuck anxiety attacks until I got hardcore therapy. It still fucks up my day but it's nothing I would define as "triggering".

Not outright; it's particularly when the situation feels helpless or the decisionmaking is tough. I had an ex use her chronic illnesses to abuse, manipulate, and control me.

I'm not sure I really know what the word means. I had never heard the term until I came here.

I'm cooking tea now -- a big salad, so like that I guess. It manifests itself with a desire to eat salad.
