back then they had little idea what was optimal, and there are all kinds of ways to interact with a screen. An early study that was done compared joysticks, mice and even more bizarre controllers with dials and something "knee controlled", but it was highly dependent on the task you were performing what was optimal. So they tried all kids of designs using wheels and little joysticks and all kinds of funky stuff before games in general needed more generalized controllers than a "pong paddle"

Nope. Basic first design. Xbox 360 is best, you use anything else after the Xbox controller you'll spin a 360 and walk away

The SNES controller was truly the trend setter as this style of controller is still used to this day.Sure, controllers added more buttons, but the layout of them remained true to this bad boy.
