Topic: Would you hire someone with a criminal background?

Anonymous A started this discussion 11 years ago #42,125

Specifically theft.

I feel strongly that the collateral consequences of minor criminal charges is really unfair to people - especially minorities, who are punished more harshly than their white counterparts for the same crime.

But would you take the risk?

Depends on the circumstances, what they stole, and how recently they did it.

How serious was the theft and how long ago did it happen?

Stole something minor when they were a teenager but years have passed since: hire
Stole a bunch of money from family and friends: no hire
Stole my lover's heart away: no hire
Stole a bunch of books indicating they have decent taste in literature: hire
Stole a car recently: no hire
Stole a self-help book about how to stop shoplifting: a hearty laugh and a hire
Stole a gun: no hire
Stole someone's mail off their doorstep: no hire
Stole a well-known piece of art out of a guarded museum: (provided I don't run a museum) hire, obviously has good organizational skills

Stole and used a credit card 6 years ago - they were an adult, but barely, at the time. Looks like it was someone they knew (boyfriend probably?). Less than $500.

Meh. I will give her a phone interview. It upsets me that criminal records are such a barrier to a good life, and I feel an obligation to act on that in my own business.

Will she be handling credit cards in the ordinary course of business? That might raise a red flag.

No, I handle the credit card transactions. She will intake cash and checks, but it would be easily caught if she did something goofy there. It would be a few years before we'd give her check writing authority.
