write a story about a professional wrestler who is internally struggling with gender dysphoria. he's closeted, and depressed, and thinks about it a lot, but, he's also good at his job and loves wrestling. however, wrestling is very hard on his body and each match just leaves him with more broken noses and scars. eventually he "snaps" and stops "acting" and starts to wrestle for real. really hurting people by doing unexpected moves and going "off script." he's dangerous now, and people won't wrestle him anymore because they are legit afraid of him. now he's the bad boy of wrestling, and the commissioner or whoever can't come out and tell fans no one will wrestle the New Reigning Champ because he fights for real. in the end, there is but one remaining challenger who'll face him... a woman, who ends up killing him in the ring.
there you go, don't write about video games.

actually, cathy, the reason why i say don't write about video games is because it's super, super, duper niche. sure, as fanfics go, you could do worse than choosing an open ended kind of sandbox like minecraft, but still, your only audience would be micecraft diehards. i'm trying to find it, but i might only have a paper copy (if that) but i wrote a story a long time ago that was based on a video game story. so, back in the day there was a game called America's Army, and it was a tactical FPS kind of game, and there was a guy who played using the handle ";" and everyone called him "the apostrophe man," and in the story he was a cheater. he used aim bots and all of that, so, no one could kill him.
the story i wrote was about a "squad" of players who decided to get as good as possible and use real tactics to bait the apostrophe man into a death trap. so the story was written from the 3rd person and i would switch back and forth between 3rd and 1st person depending on what kind of action was occurring, real life action in 1st person, and video game action in 3rd. so the squad all "got good" and refined their team tactics and used VOIP chat and started hunting the apostrophe man. of course, they found him and fought with him, players died, but, in the end our hero uses a noob tube to kill/suicide himself and the apostrophe man for a pyrrhic victory.
but, the whole point of the story was to show how the meta game was even more immersive and gripping than the actual game, and the meta game started with one player choosing to abuse gameplay to suit himself. much like life, the story grew from the actions of people, not from the actual game itself. the game was merely a vehicle, or a tool for a much more interesting event to take place than anything scripted.
Did i accomplish what i set out to do? kind of, this was for a creative writing class and most people weren't familiar enough with the game to understand direct references. even though i tried to make it accessible to the average reader and avoided making it so you'd have to know the game to understand the story, i wasn't descriptive enough with my settings to give people an idea of what was going on around the characters. also, no one cared at all for my characters because they spent way too much time "in game as an avatar" and not enough time as a person that can be empathized with.
it ended up not being very good at all, and it was also pretty predictable. it was a decent attempt, i will say, because years later South Park basically did the same story with their World of Warcraft episode and it was pretty excellent. of course, that's TV which is perfect for spoofing visual media. Writing is just not a good vehicle for telling stories within a video game world. it would be 100% better if you wrote the story, and then made a minecraft movie of the story in minecraft. just get clever with video editing and voice over stuff.
just remember that writing is the domain of the mind and the imagination, and it would be better to invent your own world than try to borrow imagery from a completely different media.
of course, if you're wanting to do a minecraft fan fiction then go for it, but, i would expect people would be more interested in other stories.
