Not the pillowcase, the pillow itself. I read somewhere that you're supposed to put it through the wash now and then.

Will it survive? Does this go for all pillows?

I can imagine somebody sticking a feather pillow in unprotected and ruining their washing machine. Perhaps handwashing would be better anyway, would it?

not often but it's good to.
if you're wary of sticking it in a washing machine then at least soak it in some soapy water, knead it for a while, and rinse it extremely well...
