'No Windows 11'
The company said it had yet to decide on what to call the operating system beyond Windows 10.
"There will be no Windows 11," warned Steve Kleynhans, a research vice-president at analyst firm Gartner who monitors Microsoft.
He said Microsoft had in the past deliberately avoided using the name "Windows 9" and instead chose Windows 10 as a way to signify a break with a past which involved successive stand-alone versions of the operating system.
However, he said, working in that way had created many problems for Microsoft and its customers.
"Every three years or so Microsoft would sit down and create 'the next great OS'," he said.
"The developers would be locked away and out would pop a product based on what the world wanted three years ago."

i loved dos. i always felt windows was overly complicated for the sake of easy accessibility. windows was just eye candy, but then their driver support blew everything else out of the water.
shit is plug and play? the fuck does that even mean? back then it was like magic.
but, windows has always been a terrible resource hog, and back then resources were important. it was worth it to get dos verions of stuff and instal drivers by hand.
it was only after about 3.1 that it was the only choice anymore. macs were a joke unless you did graphic design.

Bull. They called it "Windows 10" because the name "Windows 9" created problems in legacy code mistaking the OS for Windows 95 or 98. Also, it wouldn't surprise me if they adopted a scheme where you have to pay for service packs so that you basically are paying to upgrade to the next iteration, just with no change in name. Remember people joking that Windows 7 was basically the next Vista service pack? Same thing. I'll believe it when I see it.

I don't see how. All Windows past 2000 were based on NT. So Windows 2000 was NT 5.0, XP was 5.1, Vista was 6.0, 7 was 6.2, 8 was 6.3. programs usually check that instead of the "human-friendly" name, IIRC.
