Former X-Wing and TIE Fighter devs are building a fast PvP space combat sim.
"Our game is like World of Tanks meets Counter-Strike in space," explains Starfighter Inc. lead designer David Wessman (one of the team’s LucasArts alums) in the Kickstarter video. The game will focus on Counter-Strike-style fast gameplay sessions, with an emphasis on player-versus-player battles as opposed to spending hours flying, trading, or exploring.
Awesome! this sounds bad ass, x-wing and tie fighter were both fantastic games. Starfighter Inc. sounds like it'll be a more pure distillation of a space dogfighting sim than either Star Citizen or Elite: Dangerous. it sort of sounds like it'll be closer to Eve: Valkyrie because it will lack the FPS elements of Star Citizen and the Trading and economic elements of Elite. At the moment it will be multiplayer only, but may incorporate single player game modes or a campaign eventually as they go about crowd funding.
It's interesting that the resurgence of the dead Space combat sims is happening on the back of crowdfunding. Chris Roberts (star citizen CEO) has gone on and on about the virtues of crowd funding but mostly he extols the benefits of being free from risk-averse publishers. So i'm not surprised to see another game pursue this kind of funding model, but it's kind of surprising to see another space sim. publishers are actually looking to make space games again, now that there is a lot of proof there is big money there, but the developers are avoiding publishers in a big way. at least with space games.
except for Eve which is CCP anyway i guess, but that's all in house i suppose. like blizzard, but i guess you could call blizzard risk averse since they've decided to go the way of cloning already successful games. but i guess maybe they've always done that, they just throw a lot of money at it and put a high level of polish on everything. but these days blizzard is certainly cranking out the clones. in fact, expect a space dogfighting mmo trading game from them in 2020.
Anyway, Starfighter Inc. sounds like it could really be fun, all their energy will be spent on making space combat great and tailoring arenas and game modes. with that kind of focus and the dev's CV i think we can expect a proper spiritual successor to Tie Fighter to add to the list of this long overdue genre resurgence.

Wow another hangar simulator. How exciting.

this one won't have a hangar or a player owned space like that, you'll spawn in more like in Call of Duty, or more likely like in Eve: Valkyrie where you start a match already in a fighter loaded into a launch tube. the match starts and everyone launches.
This one isn't intended to be a "First Person Universe", it's just a good old-fashioned space combat sim.

they aren't after much of a budget, 700k.
they'll likely hit that. They list a very tight set of core features and game modes. i expect it to play like Titanfall, actually. you'll probably spawn into battles and respawn when you die and you'll probably have a variety of ships (large and small) to choose from. with small fighter ships taking place of the FPS players and large Capital ships taking place of the Titans.
Expect "Your Capital ship has dropped out of Fold-Space" or something, and then you'll maybe land your fighter inside it to take control of the large vessel or something. The way they describe it as World of Tanks meets Counter Strike makes me think it's going to play a lot differently than SC or ED with a lot more emphasis on instant action.

star citizen pretty much already exists as this game and is playable. if anything they are knocking off something already published and playable. but by the time this game is finished Star Citizen will have even more. so, this game may be focusing on only one aspect of SC, but that part of SC is done, so, these guys will always be at least 2 years behind. maybe they can catch up becasue of their narrow scope. maybe.
but, i doubt it. sc will likely always just be further along and have more features.
but, starfighter inc might be playable on consoles, so there's that.

i'm sure starfighters will probably be done right about the time star shitizen releases its 1500th real-money ship and maybe another location you can walk around your expensive paperweights at. maybe when they official push the "gaze at nonfunctional ship components" into stable release.
so a few years from now yeah

jeez, certainly sound hostile towards star citizen. no reason to get upset. starfighter inc., Eve Valkyrie and Elite: Dangerous are all going to be ported to consoles so everyone will get a chance to do dogfighting, even peasants. And when the new Battlefront comes out then you'll have about the same amount of content Star Citizen will have on PC. Between the Instant Action dogfighting of Starfighter Inc and Eve: Valkyrie plus the Trading and economic simulation in Elite: Dangerous and the FPS battles of Battlefront you'll almost have the whole Star Citizen Experience on consoles.
sure it'll be across 4 different titles with nothing connecting them, AND it won't have the persistent universe MMO aspect, so, maybe play some destiny too to really round out the experience.

good for consoles, never owned one.
but it's 2015 and you seem to still have hope star citizen will be more than an expensive 3d model catalogue
that would be so cute if it weren't so sad. you're going to be so heartbroken and I don't look forward to that day. :(
a bunch of real, new, existing games will be here when you come around though

> but it's 2015 and you seem to still have hope star citizen will be more than an expensive 3d model catalogue
but it's already a playable game. it's been more than a 3d model catalog for almost a year. it's only in its third year of development anyway, they've got 2 and a half years before the development time starts to look out of the ordinary for a game with the kind of budget they have.
but leaked internal documents have them on a schedule that aims to be in Beta by Q1 2016. the most official word is for a planned release in 2017. so they've basically given themselves the rest of this year to hammer out the remaining major features, and then spend a year polishing everything up and fleshing out the remaining artwork.
personally i believe that's optimistic, i'm not going to be looking for the "full release" until 2018. i think this game will be 6 years in development from the date of the original kick-starter campaign.
so ask me if i'm starting to feel concern a little closer to the actual deadlines that CIG has set for itself (early 2017)
