And only if people are around. Usually I only bend over and pretend to pick it up, but sometimes (if a person is close enough) I will pick a few handfuls of grass out of the ground. Then I will carry the grass in the bag until I get far enough away from them and can just dump the grass out.

biased pet owner here, but, imho, humans have paved sidewalks and streets. we paved over the lush verdant fields so that we'd have something to walk on to avoid walking in shit, and dirt and muck.
If you're walking on grass and not utilizing the paved-way that was made FOR you then you risk stepping in something. that's not your "fault," but it's generally your choice as to where you're walking. if you go off the man-made trail, you do so with some amount of risk.
When you step off the sidewalk you probably look for mud pits, but should you step in a puddle or something i doubt you think it's not partially your own fault for either not looking where you're stepping or because you're walking somewhere higher risk than elsewhere.

i walk around every day and somehow manage to avoid stepping in piles of shit. part of the reason is because, yes, i tend to watch my step and pay attention to my surroundings. i don't usually go barreling through with complete and utter disregard for what is before me. does that mean i scan the ground with a microscope before i take a step? no, because i learned how to glance where i'm walking and at least have some idea of what obstacles are in my path when i was about 3 or 4.
