Topic: It's hard to move on to a new laptop

beckyderp !4aMoRa.T2Q started this discussion 11 years ago #41,578

So I got a new laptop like a month or two ago. I've only turned it on once. It's really hard to let go of the old, comfortable laptop. My Office subscription is finally running out on this old one though, so I'll probably make the transition once that expires.

Thanks

I had the same issue when moving to my new desktop PC from my old laptop. You just have to force it, and make the new laptop just as comfortable as the old one. I believe in you. You can do it.

This one does BSODs and system recoveries all the time but that makes me admire it even more... it just keeps going.

Thank you. I do want to play GTA, which will only be possible on the new laptop. Maybe I'll force myself to use it this weekend.

GTA? On a laptop?

That'll have to be one hell of a laptop.

I wasn't saying there was anything wrong with using a laptop, I just figured you'd need a pretty high quality laptop to do it.

Though I suppose you could have some of the graphics settings below maximum. That'd probably help.

You tend to lose credibility when you get convicted of crimes.

I'm very bad at switching computers as well. Like a pensioner, I ask younger people to help me do things.

What I always did was just take the hard drive out of the old one and pop it in the new. Takes 5 minutes, very easy and all your files, programs, etc. are right where you left them!

and then you have an hour of device driver hell to follow.

I've done this on Windows and Ubuntu and never had any problems. It still beats having to transfer 100+ GB of shit over.

What version of Windows? I've done it with 98, XP and Vista and all have had driver issues. I agree Ubuntu doesn't have this problem.

Vista and 7. In both cases Windows detected the driver-less hardware and downloaded the drivers. Ubuntu did fine, too. If you're running mainstream hardware I dont see how it would be an issue. There was like half an hour of downloading and a few reboots but it was hardly "hell". You could always do it in advance by looking up the new laptops wifi card, graphics, sound, etc and downloading those to the hard drive in advance, then switching the hard drive.
