Shawyer built what he calls an EmDrive, which basically converts (he claims) electricity directly into thrust using no reaction mass. it's an engine he's proposed for spaceships, and basically an engine like this would require no ejecta. when he proposed the device and claimed to have it working, no one believed him because it appears to violate some laws of physics. if it works then no one really knows why. So NASA started to test it, just for shits and giggles, and the fucking thing appears to work. Several other groups are testing it too, the chinese, the russians i'm sure, JPL. in fact the chinese claim to have made one that generates something like a half a pound foot of torqe.
So even thought there isn't consensus that it actually works (some engineers are looking to eliminate all potential anomalies in their readings to verify it) there are now people looking to figure out why it works.
the answer might be that it generates a warp field. they did something like shine a laser through the device as it was running and they measured the light to be moving faster than it should.
apparently this whole thing is just really weird, because it really seems to work. and, like, it's not supposed to.
blows me away. science has invented something it doesn't understand. it's like they are reverse engineering some piece of alien technology.
but, even if they find it's not a warp field and is something much less sci-fi they are still generating a real thrust with a direct electric-thrust engine. that is very very big news in and of itself. Even the ion-drives they use require something be ejected from the back of the engine. in fact all other kinds of engine, like, all other kinds of space propulsion require a reaction mass. nuclear engines even use hydrogen as ejecta.
So, really fucking cool stuff, with the potential for being one of the greatest discoveries in history. it would likely define our civilization going forward. There'd be pre-warp and post-warp and history would begin anew.

it doesn't sound like it's likely that the energy will be high enough to make black holes, but maybe it could be. Even if it does then they wouldn't interact with anything, they would evaporate immediately because they are so small. the "smaller" a black hole is (basically we're talking how much mass it has) the faster it evaporates into hawking radiation. So maybe what they'll detect is hawking radiation and verify micro-black hole creation at those energy levels which would be pretty fucking cool.
the bigger danger is that there could be another catastrophic power surge and the accelerator magnets are damaged. It could cause a fire that might hurt or kill one or more engineers. It's not likely, because they've added a more robust fail safe system. but still. 6.5 TeV is no fucking joke, that's a lot of energy.

When I first hard about this is was exciting simply because it meant propulsion without expelling matter. Now with the discovery of this new property it seems they may have discovered impulse drive and warp drive at the same time.

The dismal power to energy is so low its in the noise level. Working or not its claim is it works. The inventor even makes it clear that nothing will happen unless the device is already moving with external energy. He says it cannot work in a static condition -
And all the excitement from years ago with claims of 30~50 micronewtons? SHIT THAT IS ONLY 0.04g. Fractions of a gram in a vacuum given enough time could move a feather.
So anyway anyone can take the microwave oven - make the unique shape of so called invention and pipe inside the box the Microwave output - close the door of oven and wait to see if Oven levitates.
And NASA has tested and laffed at tests cause it works when not plugged in. Same exerted force working or not re its all noise level stuff.
Making one of these is 6th grade science project cause all the guts are free for the taking from any junk yard with old Microwave ovens.

Warp field.. the theory - Embrace Einstein's field equations. Apply such to make a negative energy field in front of the space craft.
It is speculated that [illegible english deleted] results in contraction of space ...this ends up allowing space craft to move faster then the speed of light.

The concept reminds me of the Cold Fusion patents and experiments. I have no doubt the inventors were serious YET wot they measured was stuff in the noise level.
When the em drive hit forums I use for Satellite stuff there was a lot of excitement. The holy grail is finding a way to keep Satellites/Spacecraft in orbit and fuel is a huge limiting factor.
But I do remember the moment I read up on how a wacky Resonant cavity which is easy enough to fabricate (except there was some added black magic inside never detailed) And black magic violated laws of physics. I laffed a lot.

Tried a couple 3 episodes. I am a huge fan of Si Fi - Thing is it seemed to me to be a rip off of Terry Gilliam's stuff which wood b ok except after a while I need my Si Fi to appear plausible even if it breaks laws of physics.
