Topic: So, Steam is charging for mods now. comment? opinions?
squeegee started this discussion 11 years ago#41,368
As some of you may know Steam is now charging for mods.
some are $.25, some are several dollars. some are more.
some are like "add fishing minigame to skyrim" $5
and some are like "custom sword skins" $2
this has caused some backlash in the gaming community, namely
only 25% of profits are going to the content creator.
content creators are only paid when they've generated 100 dollars in sales (of course valve keeps it all until it pays out, if ever)
some people have uploaded mods they did not make and are claiming credit (and proceeds) from the sales while at the same time Valve is having the mods removed from other communities. (and valve cannot guarantee they can ever prevent this from happening, so modders beware)
in some instances the mods are using assets ripped off from other games, so valve is earning money off of stolen copyrighted game assets. the "custom swords skins" are just swords from Dark souls :/
i mean the fuck? i didn't know they were planning on doing this, but the whole implementation sounds like utter shit. they are dis-incentivizing modding all together. sounds like a way for publishers and developers to continue to make money off of even more DLC and this DLC they don't even make themselves! it's fucking lazy, a fucking money grab, and no one is asking for a middle man to come in and monetize the modding community.

I don't like the way videogaming has turned into this subscription thing where you're nickel and dimed to death at every turn. I miss the days when you bought a game and the game was complete and maybe cool people would mess around with it and make mods which you could download free.
Now you can buy games for your games? Yo dawg I herd you liek spending money so we put a purchase in your purchase so you can buy while you buy.

I don't like the sound of it. I was already put off by the idea of traditionally free content suddenly having the option of being charged for, but hearing that money is also going to the publishers or developers puts me off even more. Sounds like them extending their influence to where it shouldn't really be.
Though on the bright side, mods are bigger than just Steam. The Nexus sites, for example, are free and have a massive amount of content overall.

I hate it, just head about this but i hate it. On the bright side though people will maybe have more motives to create awesome mods? Which we can just then pirate?

I agree with him to the point that it would be nice for them to get money for the mods they create. He fails to realize that most people are only interested in his shitty work because its free and that we owe him nothing for making his work available to us especially since he knew he would not get paid. What did he expect in return? Fame? Well he failed except in this case where he is famous for being a giant dick.

Anonymous E replied with this 11 years ago, 19 seconds later, 53 minutes after the original post[^][v]#549,993
exactly! Or maybe become good enough to actually get a decent job doing so. Now instead what will probably happen is that a whole lot of professionals will take over the modding party and small time programmers
can't even have people testing their mods and encouraging them because there will be a better version of whatever he makes. Its the big man shitting on the little man.

only in part. I agree that most people that start mods don't finish them, and most certainly aren't to a quality that ought be charged for. He says people won't mod if they aren't compensated, but that goes against everything that modders have really ever done. it's always been free and people have always modded for little to no thanks.
as I see it by the time you're good enough to get PAID for your mods then you're probably already working as a programmer and maybe are doing modding as an exercise in using your skills or maybe as a way to learn or practice NEW skills. asking people to pay for half-assed amateur mods is insulting.
professionals are already being paid for their work, do we really need to compensate amateurs who're dicking around in their free time for fun? and yes, they do it for fun the same way I do Graphic Design for fun. I'm not a professional graphic designer but i know enough to hack away at a limited amount of graphic design work. I would NEVER ask someone to pay for something i created for fun to help refine my skills by doing stuff i've never done before.

Why is that lol? They are right to be mad, I think. And, ideally, this sort of anger and discontent would push Steam to drop this whole scheme (but I somehow doubt that'll happen).

why doesn't valve just produce actual content, like make Half Life 3, something everyone really wants instead of grubbing around in the dirt for scraps?

How is there ANYTHING wrong with this? This just motivates mod makers to make even more amazing content, essentially increasing the lifespan of games that we all love. I'll admit, I plan on selling a couple of mods I've made, but it's not like I would charge a ridiculous amount. $1 for a sword and $5 for a long quest is reasonable pricing, especially when most mods are really high quality already.

Because it's on my list of games for the steam summer sale.
I couldn't resist the urge and pre-purchased WWE 2K15 so my key should be given to me in a few days when it's out.
I got 10% the original price and 20% off of that from using a voucher on Green Man Gaming.

Saw these two pictures after a brief look around /v/. Now, I'd take most things that /v/ says with a pinch of salt, but this stuff seems to be legit.
Anyway, so it looks like Valve may no longer allowing donation links on mods, presumably because this would undermine their own monetisation of mods.

And here, as the all-caps anon says, it appears that Valve allows paid mods to lift assets from other mods, as long as said mods are free.

They should have just added a voluntary donate button like on nexusmods. But that won't make Valve and Bethesda money so why bother
dwltd double-posted this 11 years ago, 2 minutes later, 9 hours after the original post[^][v]#550,136
What I will say, however, is that many mod authors have mods on the Nexus and on the Skyrim Workshop, some of whom already have paid mods on the Workshop. I've taken a quick look at the comments on those paid file pages and some of the things being said are horrific. While I'm sure no one is shocked by that, this is the internet after all, simply looking at it reminds me of one of the main reasons we do what we do here. We moderate. We try to fence off a little piece of the internet where your actions have consequences, and with that in mind, if we see anyone attacking or abusing mod authors here because they have paid mods up on the Workshop you'll be gone. Instantly. With no warning.

Anyway, I suppose the idea with the Patreon model is that Valve would still get to monetise things without pissing off so many people.

i dont know, ive never used steam to look for mods because it seems that a better idea for searching for mods is: google

Steam Workshop allows you to just hit a subscribe button and it gets downloaded instantly.

Then people will probably pirate the mods. Which would be incredibly easy to do, from what I understand. At least with Skyrim mods.

valve is now DMCAing all of the mods from any other website but the Steam Workshop. If it's a paid mod, then they have it removed from everywhere but probably torrents.
It would appear they are protecting paid mods under their own copyright or something, idrk. but the point is they are going to try and kill other mod sharing sites, or at least kill paid for content.

alright well first off unless it is part of valves intellectual property then they cannot do that, since mods require you OWN the game before you use someone elses work, then that is fair use.
second of all: i can understand that, but unless you are playing valves mods then why give a shit? there are thousands upon thousands of mods for all games all the time that dont have any sort of valve footprint, the fact that valve is trying to "shut down" mod sharing sites, i frankly find that hard to believe, and even so there shouldn't be any worry in the first place since most if not all of those mods are backed up elsewhere.

A good attempt to stop the competition, but the Nexus is pretty goddamn huge. Short of getting the whole site taken down, Valve isn't going to get rid of them for the foreseeable future, and they've always been pretty serious competition for the modding scene.

@550,282 (L) > the fact that valve is trying to "shut down" mod sharing sites, i frankly find that hard to believe
While Valve absolutely cannot entirely shut down mod sites at the moment, I think it's fair to say that sites like that are much more against Valve's interests than before, since they give modders a place to share work where they're completely away from Valve's wallet.
From Steam's point of view, it'd be ideal if all modders were forced to use the Steam workshop to get a decent amount of publicity. And if they're there, then they're always with the temptation to sell their mods (which Valve then gets most of the money from).

i'm just making conversation, i don't really use mods too much anyway.
I am seeing a trend lately where large companies fight over scraps because they are not maneuverable enough to change with the times
and this has that feeling of a company who is "seeing money being left on the table" where there is none and monetizing something with the sole benefit being their own enrichment.
i think companies should produce products or perform work. No one needs valve to distribute mods, and since all they are doing is creating a repository (which already exists) and distributing data (that already has good distribution) than all valve is doing is coming is and tacking a dollar sign on something that exists on the internet despite valve. and to then take 75% of the profits away from the person who actually brings the content into being? the content can't exist despite the modders, but it CAN exist despite valve. so why should valve even have a fucking cut of anything? that's pretty fucked.
if anything it should be split between the content creators and the copyright owners. in the case of Skyrim it should, if anything, be split between Bethesda and the modders. But, there's valve holding out their hand groping at scraps.
it's unseemly.
