Trying to understand Zizek is hard and one can be tempted to understand him as a person first. This is a mistake.
Trying to understand zizek:
#1 Grew up under communism in ex Yugoslavia
I remember they had wonderful strawberry cakes, and I was sitting there eating strawberry cakes and watching Russian tanks against demonstrators. It was perfect.
#2 Speaks six languages
immersed himself in the works of Lacan, Jacques Derrida, and other philosophers, mostly French
#3 Got blacklisted by his government
He was unemployed for a year and with a kid to feed. He was 24 years old and living of his parents. Some how he eventually Got some kind of a job which involved some kind of teaching in
universities. Although this may not have been his first job during and after his blacklisting.
#4 Created false documents which looked like official invitations from foreign universities to come and lecture. This made the state pay for his trips abroad.
In 1981 Zizek headed to Paris, where he studied with Lacan's son-in-law and was psychoanalyzed by him
#5 wrote many books and so on and so on.
Zizek's playful side began to emerge during this period, when he wrote, under a pen name, a negative review of one of his own books
#7 claims to have never watched any of the movies he is in

Clearly this guy is smart. But he is clearly also kind of frightening. Right? RIGHT?
That's a understatement. Sometimes i think he is secretly a monster. Planting seeds with his mouth all over the world, putting ideas in our heads that might turn into something ugly.
He has said that he likes to see himself as a monster that only pretends to be nice to not offend people. Meanwhile he goes around telling people we need new ideas how to run society.
Such radical ideas don't always end well you know.
