Yeah they do. The silliest one I see on credit cards is what we call the "fake inn" fraud trend. The merchant name will be something like "Sunset Inn #8235690087". It's always something-inn followed by a string of numbers. It's always a $1 charge or a $0 charge or something small like $8.63. It will say it's in some random location in the US where there's no such inn. All transactions have an MCC (merchant category code) that tells us what sort of business it is, and it's always a random MCC that has nothing to do with a hotel. Why these criminals don't just set the MCC to 7011 to make it look more real, I don't know. Anyway, you get the point. It's as fake looking as it gets. They're not really using it to steal money. They just use it to test the card information they have to make sure that it's valid, and it's always followed by some larger purchase attempt at Target or something which we always decline. They think they're being clever, but if they just tried using the counterfeit card at Target first we might mistake it for legit activity, but instead they do these stupid test charges that tip us off every time.

oh, that's interesting. how would they test a card like that? i figured you'd just steal a card and just go use it at target and if it fails, it fails, if not, success! is that not how "clever" criminals do it?

I almost never see physically stolen cards these days. They get the card information and then they use it online or they make a counterfeit card. They test it to tell if the card information they have is good or not.
